City boss Phil Parkinson was understandably thrilled to see his side get the new campaign off to a pleasing start with a giant-killing victory over League 1 Notts County in the Capital One Cup this Saturday.
After a hard-working performance from Parkinson's men had taken their higher-ranked hosts past ninety minutes, a fine finish from James Hanson five minutes into the first period of extra time secured a deserved opening day win for City.
Parkinson said: "I'm delighted by the lads' effort today. It was a really hard working performance from them.
"We'd spoken throughout pre-season about working hard, closing down, keeping with your runners and really putting a shift in during games, and I thought we did that today.
"I thought the discipline of the boys was excellent, and on top of that we played some really good football during the game as well.
"It's difficult to single out just one particular player for praise after an effort like that. The work rate and attitude of the lads was first class.
"Going 120 minutes was a good fitness test for us, especially coming so early into this new season.
"To get through those 120 minutes and still look fresh towards the end is a credit to the players and the work they have done during pre-season.
"We now need to take all the good things out of today and carry them over into the Gillingham game next weekend."
While keen to sing the praises of his whole team, Parkinson did acknowledge the quality of his side's winning strike from Hanson.
Hanson, City's top scorer from last season, got off the mark for the new campaign with a fabulous curling strike into the top corner from around the edge of the area.
"It was a magnificent finish from James," added Parkinson.
"Some of our attacking play was very pleasing today, and what a great finish from the big fella to cap it off.
"He scored an almost identical goal against Wexford in pre-season with his right foot. Today it was his left foot and it comes as a reward for practising hard over pre-season."
