Hanson knows he needs more

25 July 2012

James Hanson knows he can't waste any opportunities to impress City boss Phil Parkinson as he looks to cement a place in the Bantams' team for the big kick off next month.

The introduction of summer recruits Garry Thompson and Alan Connell, plus the elevation of Adam Baker up from last season's youth ranks, means Parkinson now has as many as six attacking options to choose from for the season ahead.

Hanson did his own chances of nailing down a regular starting berth no harm at all during City's first friendly of their Irish tour, netting two well-taken goals against Wexford Youths last (Tuesday) evening.

The two strikes came barely days after Hanson - City's top scorer last season - scored at Tadcaster Albion in the Bantams' opening pre-season fixture of the summer.

Despite the forward's goal-den start to City's run of friendly fixtures, however, the 24 year-old knows he still has a lot of work ahead of him to successfully fend off competition from his fellow striking team-mates.

Hanson said: "Goals breed confidence and all of our strikers seem to be scoring at the moment. That is the main thing I suppose for the gaffer, he wants to see that competition for places.

"We're all fighting for those two striking spots in the side. All of the other strikers within the squad are pretty different to myself so I think we all give the manager something extra to think about.

"The likes of Garry Thompson and Alan Connell in particular have played at a higher level which is hopefully going to be a good thing for the club. We want to do well next season and bringing in those sort of players should help.

"I know that they will be looking for a starting spot when the season starts next month so I know I have to work really hard each chance I get to impress the gaffer.

"Hopefully I can get some more goals at Bray and we can finish our tour here in Ireland with another win."

This Wednesday takes City's presence in Ireland past the three day mark. Rooming with good friend and fellow striker Ross Hannah during the Bantams' stay in the country, Hanson says he is enjoying life in the Emerald Isle so far.

Hanson added: "It's been good for us all, especially for the new signings. It allows us all to bond a bit more as a group.

"The new lads have been settling in well and everyone seems to be enjoying the atmosphere around the place at the moment.

"I've been happy for Ross to see him score the goals that he has done in the past two games. I thought we linked up quite well at times last night (vs Wexford) which I suppose is good for us both.

"Ross is like me, he wants to try and get in that team for the opening games of the season.

"We've good friends off the pitch and our girlfriends are even friends with each other as well so it's always good if we can try and help us other on the pitch."

Hannah partnered Hanson in attack for the second pre-season match in a row at Wexford on Tuesday after also starting together at Tadcaster Albion last Saturday.

Also for the second game running, the duo bagged three goals between them at Ferrycarrig Park to carry on the pair's impressive start to City's friendly fixtures.

Following Hannah's double at Tadcaster at the weekend though, it was Hanson's turn to pick up a brace of goals last evening.

Both goals were worthy of praise - one a thumping header and the other a stunning drive into the top corner - but the usually left-footed Hanson was in no doubt over his personal favourite.

"It's got to be the right foot shot (into the top corner) I suppose. I normally expected to score with my head but the right foot shot was something that stuck out," added Hanson.

"Ross has let it go after I've shouted for him to let it go and luckily I've managed to put it in the top corner."
