McBurnie signs pro deal

23 August 2013

City have handed talented young striker Oliver McBurnie a professional contract with the football club following his impressive recent scoring form.

McBurnie, 17, has penned a three-year pro deal this Friday at the Coral Windows Stadium to keep him at the football club until the summer of 2016.

Having started the season as an apprentice, the contract, which is effective immediately, is the first professional deal for McBurnie in his fledgling career.

The striker, who recently began training with Phil Parkinson's first team, will continue to play for City's youth team but will be available for selection for the senior side if and when the Bantams boss requires.

Head of Youth Development Peter Horne, who can be seen with Oliver in the main article picture, believes the deal shows that City are serious about the players in their youth set-up.

Horne said: "First and foremost, we are all delighted for Oliver that he has earned his first pro deal.

"I think this contract offer for Ollie shows that the Gaffer (Phil Parkinson) does take a keen interest in the youth players we have here at the club and is ready to give them a chance if they earn it.

"Hopefully the other lads we have in the youth team and in the academy will look at this deal for Ollie and see that there is a genuine pathway through from the youth ranks up into the first team squad here at Bradford City."

Having already caught the eye of the Bantams coaching staff during his first year as an apprentice last season, the promising forward began to grab the headlines this summer before this season's campaign had even started.

After being recommended by Horne when Manchester United came calling for a striker to borrow following injuries in their ranks, McBurnie enjoyed an extremely productive week on work experience with the Red Devils last month.

Joining up with Manchester United's squad for their participation in the Under 18s Milk Cup in Northern Ireland, McBurnie played a major part in ensuring that the Lancashire giants would end up as the competition's winners.

He finished joint-top scorer for the youth tournament with five goals in five games, including two goals in the semi final and the winner in the final.

McBurnie has also helped City's youth team bag two wins out of their first two fixtures this season.

He scored his first of the campaign for the Bantams in a 2-0 win over Grimsby a couple of weeks ago before netting a 'perfect' hat-trick - right foot, left foot, header - last weekend as City registered an impressive 3-1 victory at Hull City.
