Parkin's praise

25 August 2013

Bantams assistant Steve Parkin has praised City's team effort this Saturday as they defeated Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United in a pulsating Sky Bet League 1 encounter at the Coral Windows Stadium.

Netting his fifth and sixth goals of the season, Nahki Wells was City's match-winner against the Blades with a strike in each half to secure a 2-0 victory for Phil Parkinson's men.

Although Wells will probably grab most of the local headlines for the weekend after his goal-scoring efforts, Parkin was keep to heap praise on all of City's heroes from the afternoon as the Bantams bounced back in style following their first league defeat of the season at Port Vale last weekend.

Parkin said: "We're delighted with the performance and the result.

"Obviously, the level of performance from the lads week in, week out is key, but it is important that you try and get a result out of game as well.

"We had a good week on the training ground leading into this game. We did a lot of work with the lads after the Port Vale game and they have shown the results of that work today (Saturday).

"Sheffield United are a really good side but we prevailed in the game thanks to our organisation and determination.

"David Weir (Sheffield United manager) has signed some good players, some dangerous players, and it was important that we were bang on it from the start.

"The defending, in general, was superb from our lads. Stevie Darby and Mezzer (James Meredith) were outstanding. The bravery shown by Andrew (Davies) and Rory (McArdle) to continually put their head on things when lots of corners and crosses were coming in the box was also brilliant.

"To a man, everyone was committed and right at it. I think we thoroughly deserved the victory in the end.

"We live our lives wanting to win at everything we do. That is how I have been brought up and I know that is what the manager instills in the players.

"Even though we have gone up a division, we have some good players in our squad and we have signed some more good players over the summer months.

"As starts go to a new season in a new division, apart from the slight disappointment of the first half at Port Vale, the lads have been terrific.

"They have shown a lot of willingness, a lot of commitment and a lot of energy."

With the attendance figure up over 18,000 and City fans in full voice ready to back their team throughout almost the entire match, this Saturday's Yorkshire derby was played out with a real buzz and vibe around the Coral Windows Stadium.

Parkin added: "It was an amazing atmosphere.

"We've had the ground almost full of supporters today almost everywhere you looked. It is rare in football nowadays to have all four sides of a ground full of supporters.

"Our fans were terrific today - they really did create an amazing atmosphere throughout the game."

Wells' first of the afternoon right on the stroke of half-time to give City the lead also saw the Bermudian break a club scoring record.

The in-form striker ensured that he became the first Bantam to score in eight consecutive matches after equaling the previous record of seven on the trot at Port Vale seven days earlier.

Parkin continued: "It is a terrific achievement and we shouldn't hide away from the fact that he is a very dangerous striker.

"We are proud to have him and we are going to work to keep him here.

"It is a very proud record for him to hold and he scored two goals today that show why he is a good striker. The first one was goal of sheer class and quality and his second goal was a scruffy poachers effort."
