Goal of 2013

31 December 2013

Goal of the year: 2013

We are now almost at the end of what has been an incredible year for the fans, the players and everybody associated with Bradford City Football Club.

To commemorate a tremendous 12 months we are running a ‘Goal of the year’ competition for 2013 where 12 contenders have been chosen from the second half of last season and the first half of the current one.

It is down to you the fans to vote for your winner, you can vote by simply watching all 12 nominees and then clicking the ‘Like’ (Thumbs-Up) button which is located either above or below the video (depending which browser you use) of the goal which you liked the most. The videos are all available to watch on our official YouTube channel – HERE

The competition is similar to the ‘Goal of the month’ competition run on BBC’s Match of the Day show where the goals are judged on sheer quality, so please bear that in mind.

The voting closes at 5pm on 31st January 2014 and a video will appear on our YouTube channel shortly after, revealing the winning goal and therefore the best of 2013 as voted for by the fans of Bradford City.

The 12 nominees are:

Goal 1: Carl McHugh vs Aston Villa

Carl’s emphatic header in front of a full Kop restored City’s 2 goal cushion in the 1st Leg of the Capital One Cup Semi-Final.

Goal 2: Nahki Wells vs Fleetwood Town

One of Nahki’s many goals during the 2012-13 season, this was amongst his best. He stepped up to curl a 25 yard free kick past motionless Town stopper Scott Davies to get City back on level terms in the match.

Goal 3: Garry Thompson vs AFC Wimbledon

City fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat on the day but Garry’s cushioned volley into the top corner following a defensive lapse deserved to be a match winning goal.

Goal 4: Nahki Wells vs Chesterfield

Wells combined with James Hanson to fire an instinctive volley into the bottom corner to open the scoring in a game City couldn’t really lose. The game finished 2-2.

Goal 5: Garry Thompson vs Burton Albion

Garry popped up with a number of goals during the second half of the 2012-13 but arguably none more important than this one, after Calvin Zola’s double and Robbie Weir’s strike for The Brewers, this thunderbolt from Thompson gave City a much needed life-line in the tie.

Goal 6: James Hanson vs Burton Albion

In a game where City were better on the day all over the park, James Hanson’s unstoppable strike with his weaker right foot gave City the lead in the tie for the first time to send the away following behind the goal into ecstatic celebration.

Goal 7: Mark Yeates vs Carlisle United

Making his full home debut for The Bantams, Mark Yeates produced a stunning goal in the 4-0 demolition of Carlisle United; after cutting inside onto his right foot he launched a 25 yard shot into the top corner.

Goal 8: Nahki Wells vs Sheffield United

The first of two goals on the day for Wells, this one was taken brilliantly. He turned Blades’ defender Neil Collins inside and out before firing a shot across goal into the bottom corner past George Long.

Goal 9: Kyel Reid vs Stevenage

On his first league start of the season, Kyel produced an excellent free kick into the top corner from 20 yards out to level the scores at 1-1 against Stevenage.

Goal 10: Kyel Reid vs Walsall

This strike was hit with such power it actually bounced off the back of the net. After picking the ball up on half way he darted past 3 or 4 players before rocketing a shot into the top corner from long range setting City on their way to an excellent 2-0 victory.

Goal 11: Kyel Reid vs MK Dons

Some might argue that this goal was just an over-hit cross but after tricking his way past a couple of defenders he chipped the ball over Ian McLoughlin who could do little to prevent it hitting the back of the net.

Goal 12: Nahki Wells vs Leyton Orient

Nahki is a cool head under pressure and this goal was perfect evidence of that. A goal down to the league leaders, deep into injury time, up stepped Wells to strike a free kick into the top corner and rescue a point for The Bantams.
