City youngster given Man Utd opportunity

25 July 2013

City have given permission for one of its apprentices to appear for Manchester United in the forthcoming Northern Ireland Milk Cup.

Second year apprentice Oliver McBurnie will represent United in the international under 18s tournament later this month, which this year will play host to teams from countries such as Russia, America, Mexico and Brazil, along with England and Ireland.

McBurnie will take his place in United's squad for the tournament to cover for some injuries picked up recently in the Red Devils camp.

The Milk Cup has traditionally played a significant part in Manchester United's youth programme. This year's participation will be United's 24th on the trot, with the likes of Gary Neville, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Darren Fletcher and Danny Welbeck all having played in the competition in the past for the club.

United begin their tournament next Monday (29 July) against County Antrim before playing American side South Coast Strikers and German outfit TUS Altenberge a few days later.

The move, which came about due to City's links with the Manchester United youth department, will see McBurnie move to the Red Devils on work experience for the duration of United's participation in the Milk Cup.

McBurnie, who trained with his new team-mates for the first time this Thursday, is scheduled to continue his scholarship with City thereafter.

City's Head of Youth Department Peter Horne explained: "Manchester United have had one or two injuries recently and they were short of a striker ahead of their appearance in the Milk Cup.

"Given our links with Manchester United in the past, they came to us to ask if they could borrow one of our forwards for the tournament.

"After looking over recent performances and evaluating how our players in the youth team have been progressing, we decided to choose Ollie McBurnie to go with Manchester United.

"This decision has been taken with the full backing of the gaffer (Phil Parkinson).

"We both believe this will be a wonderful opportunity for Ollie. It will be a great chance for him to sample different styles of football and for him to play against teams from all over the world.

"He will also be involved with one of the greatest clubs in the land.

"We feel that this move can't help but benefit Ollie and the club."
