Whose goal is it anyway?!

21 September 2013

First away win of the season secured - but who netted the all-important winner?!

That was the question many City fans leaving the Priestfield Stadium were asking themselves given the uncertainty surrounding the exact nature of the Bantams' match-winning goal.

It was Gary Jones' delivery from an eighth-minute corner that put the ball into the mix before it ended up in Stuart Nelson's net, although there was a strong suggestion that Garry Thompson had got a touch by the near post.

Given the fact that Jones was the last City player to definitely get a touch on the ball before the goal was scored, the general feeling around the Gillingham press box was that the Bantams skipper had to be awarded the goal.

Unsurprisingly, Jones was pleased to hear after the match that he had been awarded the goal but team-mate Thompson was still laying claim to the match-winner himself.

Thompson tweeted: "Just to clear it up, defo (definitely) my goal".

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson admitted he initially thought Thompson had got the last touch but that a further couple of looks at the goal on the match DVD might be required.

Parkinson said: "I think only video evidence will settle this one because I think both of them are after this one!

"At the time, I thought it was Garry Thompson who had got the touch but we'll have to get another look at the goal."
