Just that cutting edge missing

21 April 2014

City boss Phil Parkinson felt that a lack of cutting edge was the only thing missing from his side's performance following the Bantams' narrow loss at Play-Offs hopefuls Swindon Town this Easter Monday.

Lee Cox's 64th minute strike - the first goal City have conceded away from home in four matches - gave the points to Mark Cooper's Robins following a tight contest at the County Ground.

As they have done in recent away fixtures, Parkinson's side showed commendable discipline and organisation to keep out their higher-ranked hosts for the first hour of the game.

The Bantams unfortunately couldn't threaten Swindon's own defence often enough throughout the game, however, and, despite a bright opening to the match, always looked up against it once Cox had broken the deadlock.

Parkinson was also left to rue the forced withdrawal of Nathan Doyle at half time after the midfielder, who was playing in a holding role in a 4-3-3 formation, tweaked an old groin problem in the first period.

Parkinson said: "I felt we were excellent in the first half. We had some good chances on the break that we couldn't really capitalise on and we also restricted them to very little.

"Losing (Nathan) Doyley at half time was a set-back for us. Mez (James Meredith) has played in midfield before but it was a big ask for someone who has been out for so long like he has, especially against a really good team like Swindon.

"We perhaps just lost a bit of control as a result. In the first half, Doyley was linking the play really well for us and we lost our way a bit in the second half and conceded a goal.

"I felt Stephen Darby was fouled in the build up to their goal - we're a bit disappointed the referee hasn't spotted that. We've also probably just missed that little bit of quality in the final third as well though.

"We've got into some decent crossing positions but not been able to produce that killer ball.

"If you look at the some of the away matches we've had of late, we've had some really tough games in there.

"We've done well with the discipline of the team in recent away fixtures but obviously we've got to make sure we look like scoring as well.

"We have players who can produce in the final third more than they have done today (Monday).

"That is what we needed to add to today's performance."
