Small margins cost us

1 March 2014

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson was left cursing the small margins he felt cost City the chance of winning against Stevenage this Saturday.

Parkinson's men were denied their third win on the spin thanks to two stunning second half strikes from Stevenage's Luke Freeman that gave the visitors a come-from-behind 3-2 victory.

The City chief certainly felt his side should have defended better for Freeman's first goal in particular.

He was also left rueing the fact that City couldn't kick on from winning positions in the match at 1-0 and 2-1 and make the game safe - both factors the ultimately sent the Bantams tumbling to defeat.

Parkinson said: "They were clearly two great strikes (from Freeman) but the second one we should have done better with.

"You have to give him credit but we have to look at what we could have done better as well, certainly with the second one.

"We've let a good player run through the heart of our team unchallenged and that can't happen.

"The whole ground were screaming for someone to close him down and the next second it is in the top corner.

"He's ran too far with the ball and someone has to close him down - simple as that.

"In that situation the player with the ball is the obvious danger.

"Blocks in and around the box are so important - we should have dealt with it.

"His second comes from a well-worked free-kick but we've had chances to finish the game off before then and we didn't take them.

"I thought in the first half we started well and got a terrific goal. We seemed to sit back a bit after that but then got ourselves going again with the second goal.

"I just felt in the second half, however, we lacked a bit of composure in our general play.

"We were slashing at a few things and lacking a bit of communication between team-mates - I'm not quite sure why that was.

"We certainly didn't play as well as we could do in that period by any stretch of the imagination.

"Even when you don't play well though, if you can get that third goal in the second half it would have probably killed Stevenage off.

"We are all disappointed with today (Saturday) because we've put ourselves in a great position in terms of the two previous home wins coming into this game.

"I think we have wasted a good opportunity today.

"We had some chances to score early in the second period. If we do so, it kills the game off and we go onto win. It wasn't to be though.

"As we always say, games are decided on very small margins.

"We have to hold our hands up today and say we weren't brilliant.

"We still should have come away with something though.

"We should be here talking about how we've defended well and were resilient and how we've grinded out a win despite not playing great, but you can't do that if you concede three goals."
