A late intervention from Oldham Athletic substitute Jordan Bove helped to edge a tight Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie in the favour of the hosts, thus ending City's involvement in the competition at the first round stage.

With the prospect of penalties looming, young striker Bove pounced to fire home from close range with only two minutes of normal time remaining after Jordan Pickford had parried out a cross-come-shot from Oldham winger Carl Winchester.

The defeat was harsh on a much-changed City side that featured as many as five changes from Saturday's win at Rochdale, including a debut appearance for French central defender Christopher Routis.

Phil Parkinson's side controlled a decent chunk of the second period, with Jason Kennedy seeing two efforts blocked inside the box and Mark Yeates hitting the post with a low drive from around 20 yards out.

74min: SUB - The Bantams bring on Billy Clarke for James Meredith. The change means Yeates will move to the left of City's four-man midfield and Clarke will operate just behind fellow substitutes Hanson and Bennett.
70min: The Vanishing Spray is used for the first time in game when Oldham are awarded a wide free-kick just outside the Bantams area. Mills takes the kick but his wayward effort sails into the crowd behind Pickford's goal.
69min: SUBS - The Bantams bring on Mason Bennett and James Hanson for McBurnie and Mclean respectively.
65min: Winchester's looping effort on the half-volley from outside the box is held with relative ease by a back-pedaling Pickford.
63min: YELLOW CARD - Dolan is booked for bringing down Dayton with a mistimed tackle on the stretch just inside Oldham's half.
59min: McBurnie's flick on from a Yeates cross sees the ball into Mclean's path. The striker moves away from James Wilson inside the Oldham area but his left footed shot on the turn flashes comfortably wide of goal.
58min: Yeates strikes the post! The attacker's low effort from around 20 yards out has the beating of Rachubka but the strike bounces away off the base of the post. Stephen Darby crosses the ball back into the area seconds later but Mclean can only glance a header a good yard or so wide despite attacking the cross with real purpose.
55min: Mark Yeates' clipped cross into the area reaches the head of Mclean but the striker's effort drops straight into the clutches of Rachubka.
52min: A Mclean cross pops up into the path of Kennedy via the frame of Elokobi. Kennedy goes for angled strike across goal but his driven effort is blocked again by that man Elokobi.
47min: Sheehan's cross into the box drops into the path of Kennedy. The midfielder takes the ball down on his chest before firing in a fierce left-footed drive that Joseph Mills bravely blocks behind for a corner.

42min: After receiving possession via a Brian Wilson throw-in, Winchester helps the ball into the area towards team-mate Amari Morgan-Smith, who sends narrowly wide of Pickford's far post with a downward header.
35min: Sheehan's hanging delivery direct from a wide free-kick is pulled back from the byline by Routis for McArdle, who smashes against the post from close range. Play had already been halted by the time McArdle connected with the ball, however, after it was deemed that Routis hadn't managed to stop the ball going out for a goal-kick over on the far side.
30min: Jason Kennedy's arrives onto Sheehan's flighted far post cross but the midfielder's header goes over the bar.
26min: James Dayton shoots from just outside the area after receiving the ball from Carl Winchester but the effort flies narrowly wide of Pickford's far post.
24min: Sheehan's delivery from the resulting corner drops into the path of Christopher Routis following a touch off the head of McBurnie. The French defender is in decent space in the middle of Oldham's penalty area but his prodded effort is sliced comfortably wide of goal.
24min: Rory McArdle's searching ball forward from distance suddenly sees Aaron Mclean in behind Oldham's back line and moving towards Rachubka's goal. As Mclean waits for the bouncing ball to sit down into his path though, the recovering James Wilson gets back to block behind the striker's eventual effort with a sliding tackle.
18min: Dolan arrives on a free ball a few yards outside the corner of Oldham's penalty area but the midfielder's low drive whistles narrowly wide of the shot-stopper's near post.
15min: Danny Philliskirk robs Matthew Dolan of the ball inside City's own half of the pitch before driving forward and firing in a low drive from our around 20 yards out that is straight at Pickford.
12min: Alan Sheehan's delightful corner delivery is met the well-timed run of Oliver McBurnie. The young striker gets his head to the ball but his connection isn't completely clean while under pressure from his Oldham marker and the ball bounces wide of Paul Rachubka's far post.
9min: Brian Wilson's teasing centre fired across the six yard box is intercepted by the outstretched foot of Rory McArdle before Jordan Pickford can bounce on the loose ball.
