PARKINSON ACKNOWLEDGES 'IMPORTANT' WIN

25 April 2015

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson felt it was important City finished their home fixtures off this season with a win following their 1-0 victory over Barnsley at the Coral Windows Stadium this Saturday.

With the eyes of the country's media on City due to the forthcoming 30th anniversary of the Valley Parade fire disaster, Parkinson's men signed off in front of their own fans for another campaign with three points thanks to Jon Stead's first half winner.

Given the poignancy of the day due to the pre-match minute's silence to honour the victims of the fire disaster, the fact that the game will have been the last City fixture many fans will see before the summer break, plus the humbling nature of the Bristol City loss on the Bantams' previous outing at Valley Parade, Parkinson felt his players responded in the right way against Barnsley.

Parkinson said: "I'm pleased that we have managed to pick up the win. The lads knew the importance of today to the football club.

"It was important to us as a club for many reasons.

"With the 30th anniversary of the Valley Parade fire disaster coming up, our last home match of the season, plus losing so heavily the last time we were at home (vs Bristol City) - there was a lot at stake for us.

"We were up against a good side in Barnsley but I felt the lads dealt with the pressure of the day well. It was a solid and professional performance from us.

"Barnsley flood that midfield - they put that extra man in there and they enjoyed a fair bit of possession as a result - but I always felt we looked the more likely scorers.

"It was a fantastic pass from Billy Knott for the goal - probably pass of the day - and it was a really controlled finish from Jon (Stead).

"I'm obviously pleased with the clean sheet as well. Gary Liddle hasn't played much for us at centre half but he is experienced in at the position and was very composed in there for us - he made some good decisions.

"Once it became clear we couldn't get into the Play-Offs, the aim was to finish higher in the league and with more points than we did last season, and we want to finish that job off at Crewe Alexandra next weekend."

Following the victory, City's players and staff were treated to a rousing reception as they circled the pitch for the traditional end-of-season lap of appreciation.

Parkinson added:"It was magnificent support from the fans again today.

"I don't think the loyalty and passion of our supporters can be beaten anywhere in the country. It hasn't gone all our own way at home this season but the fans have stuck with us - that is the sign of good supporters.

"I would like to thank every single one of them for their home support this season.

"Every visiting manager speaks about our home support when they come here and it is important for the club's progression that we keep this place as full as possible.

"The lads thrive on the atmosphere created around here, and so they should. It is not every club that has a stadium so behind you like we have."
