James Hanson's seventh-minute tap-in had given Phil Parkinson's men an early lead but Luke Norris' fierce drive from outside the area levelled things up for the visitors shortly after the start for the second period.

A Gillingham corner midway into the half then forced them into the lead when Adedeji Oshilaja's header appeared to hit off Hanson before finding the far corner of Ben Williams' goal.

Hanson had an opportunity to reclaim some of the glory for himself and Parkinson's side deep in injury time but his close range header was superbly repelled by a fine reflex save from Stuart Nelson.

90+4min: So close from Hanson! Marshall's invitingly cross into the box finds the head of Hanson but the striker's close range header is somehow kept out thanks to the reflexes of Nelson.

90+2min: Hanson's headed knock-down into the middle from Anderson's cross is just kicked clear out of the reach of a lurking Davies. Knott goes to fire the loose ball goalwards from just outside the box but his effort on the volley sails high and wide into the Kop behind Nelson's goal.

His header is cleared just in front of the path of Luke James but Morris fires the ball back into the box. Hanson tries to get on the end of the deflected drive but Gillingham can eventually clear.

29min: An invitingly free-kick delivery from deep into the box by Josh Morris looks for a second to have placed McArdle in with a sight of goal but the ball just drops narrowly out of the reach of the defender and Stuart Nelson can gather.

28min: Dickenson's low searching corner delivery nearly bounces kindly into the path of Adedeji Oshilaja in a threatening position but a watchful McArdle is just on hand in time to kick clear.

15min: A purposeful run from Dack ends with the midfielder forcing Williams into a full length save after a fierce drive from just outside the box.

14min: Dickenson's teasing low cross towards the near post is claimed at the second attempt by Williams to prevent the ball from going out for a corner.

10min: Norris' knock-down into the path of Dack gives the midfielder a sight of goal just outside the box but his drive is deflected up into the grateful grasp of Williams.

6min: With Gillingham breaking forward at pace, Donnelly turns away from Rory McArdle inside the area but his rising drive sails wide of goal. 

5min: After receiving the ball from Bradley Dack, Rory Donnelly cuts inside from the right before firing in a low angled drive from the edge of the box that narrowly goes wide of Williams' far post.

4min: Brennan Dickenson's near post cross is glanced towards goal by the head of Norris but the effort is straight at Williams.

2min: Luke Norris turns into a shooting opportunity inside City's penalty area but his attempted curling effort floats harmlessly wide of Ben Williams' goal.
