York substitute Josh Carson slammed home the winning penalty for the hosts in the shoot-out after Tony McMahon and Christopher Routis had earlier seen their efforts from the spot saved.

Routis initially gave Phil Parkinson's men the side the lead of the round 1 tie midway into the first period with a fine volley but a penalty from Luke Summerfield early after the restart levelled things up.

Alan Sheehan fired over the bar with his own penalty later in the second period before York looked set to win it in normal time when James Berrett crashed home a free-kick with only five minutes to go.

City substitute James Hanson took the game into an extra period, however, when he struck in the final minute of injury time to make the score 2-2.

A goalless period of extra-time saw the tie go to penalties, which were to be taken in front of the York City fans behind one of the goals.

Into the shoot-out, City 'keeper Ben Williams saved Jake Hyde's penalty and nearly kept out Reece Thompson's kick but Carson's winner condemned the Bantams to their first penalties lost in ten encounters.

118min: GOAL.....NO! York have a goal disallowed for offside after Thompson converted Tutonda's shot across goal from close range.

115min: Penn's bobbling drive from just outside the box is held by Williams.

113min: Carson's low near post corner is flicked over the bar via the boot of Hyde.

108min: Hyde hits the top of Williams' near post! With Thompson leading a York break forward, the young striker plays Hyde into space inside the box and the substitute forward proceeds to crashing a rising angled drive against the woodwork.

98min: SUB - York bring on Josh Carson for Summerfield.

95min: Hanson heads narrowly over the bar from Sheehan's cross into the box.

91min: SUB - York bring on Jake Hyde for Oliver before the start of the first period of extra time.

90min: There will be a minimum of four minutes of time added on at the end of the tie.

89min: Hanson twice looks to get on the end of a testing Sheehan delivery into the box but York eventually scramble the ball behind for a corner.

88min: Billy Clarke's low delivery across the six yard box tries to pick out the run of Morris but the ball narrowly beats the Bantams substitute.

87min: Hanson fires wide with a snap shot from just outside the box.

83min: YELLOW CARD - McArdle is booked for a late lunge on Summerfield just outside City's penalty area.

80min: SUB - The Bantams bring on James Hanson for Davies.

73min: Billy Clarke's low drive from outside the area is held at the second attempt by Flinders.

72min: Oliver's near post pull-back is fired wide of Williams' near post by Thompson.

67min: Berrett leads a dangerous York break after Thompson had blocked McArdle's attempted header clear. Berrett had options around him but he elects to shoot himself and his effort from the edge of the area rises comfortably over the bar.

66min: SUB - The Bantams now do indeed bring on Billy Clarke for James.

63min: YELLOW CARD - Liddle is booked for a late tackle on Penn just inside York's half of the pitch.

61min: SUB - The Bantams bring on Josh Morris for Anderson.

60min: McArdle manages to head away Summerfield's long ball forward towards James Berrett. With Williams out of goal, Thompson tries to hook the ball over him but the effort drops wide of goal.

56min: James requires a spot of treatment after receiving a barge in the back from Winfield. Despite it looking at one point like Billy Clarke may replace him, James is eventually able to continue though.

53min: Davies tries to catch Flinders off his line but the striker's effort from the edge of the box is claimed by the York shot-stopper.

51min: Sheehan's brilliant delivery into the box is headed narrowly wide by Davies.

46min: York restart the tie.

45+1min: Oliver gets free deep inside City's penalty area but McMahon dives across the York forward to block his strike for goal behind for a corner.

45min: There will be a minimum of one minute added on at the end of the first period.

43min: Summerfield's deep cross into the box is volleyed wide of Williams' near post by David Tutonda.

40min: From the resulting Sheehan free-kick from deep into the area, Routis again gets space round the back at a set-piece but this time his side-foot volley across goal goes narrowly wide of Flinders' far post.

39min: YELLOW CARD - York's second booking for the night goes to their skipper Penn for a foul on Marshall around the halfway line.

32min: James engineers a chance for himself after wrestling possession of the ball off Keith Lowe. The Bantams striker drives towards the box and past a couple of York players but his eventual low strike from the edge of the area is dragged wide of Flinders' goal.

23min: Picking up a half-cleared Steven Davies cross, Sheehan takes aim from around 20 yards out but his driven effort is beaten away by Flinders.

22min: York nearly have a sight of goal straight after the restart, however, as Reece Thompson and Oliver try to force the ball goalwards deep inside City's penalty box. Oliver does eventually poke the ball towards goal but the effort lacks any sort of pace and Gary Liddle is able to clear the danger. 

18min: YELLOW CARD - Luke Summerfield is booked for dragging back Marshall midway into York territory as the City winger burst forward with some menace.

17min: Rory McArdle's header across goal from McMahon's free-kick into the area is pushed away by Scott Flinders. Luke James latches onto the loose ball inside the box but his half-volley goalwards is blocked by the frame of Russell Penn.

12min: Paul Anderson leads a bright attack forward before feeding the ball wide to Mark Marshall. The left winger's cross into the area is a teasing one but Luke James just can't quite get a clean connection on the ball with his head as the delivery goes across the box.

1min: Vadaine Oliver charges down Tony McMahon's attempted clearance up field from the kick off but the striker's angled drive from outside the box is straight at Ben Williams.

0min: The Bantams kick off the tie.
