Bantams boss Phil Parkinson praised his players' patience and persistence after City secured an early Christmas present for their fans with victory at Chesterfield.

Tony McMahon's third goal of the season midway through the second period at the Proact Stadium was enough to collect all three points for Parkinson's men in City's final game before Christmas Day.

McMahon's goal came after the Bantams had knocked on the Chesterfield door more than once during the game, going close on a number of occasions.

Ahead of McMahon's match-winner, City had twice hit the woodwork through Billy Clarke and Kyel Reid.

Clarke and James Hanson also saw efforts impressively saved by home 'keeper Tommy Lee, while the two Bantams strikers went close on separate occasions as well.

Parkinson said: "We probably should have scored more today (Saturday) but the most pleasing thing from the game was that we stayed calm as we searched for that goal.

"We could have scored three or four before Tony (McMahon) scored but there was a real maturity from the team and we kept doing the right things in the right areas.

"Eventually we got the moment we needed thanks to great play from Billy Clarke and a really calm finish from Tony.

"Tony has the fitness and athleticism to always be on the end of those crosses towards the back post. He is always in the right position and he has had some chances because of that in recent games.

"He has been unlucky with a few of those opportunities but he has been working hard on the training ground on his striking technique.

"All that time on the training pitch came to fruition for Tony today when he scored his goal.

"We always talk about playing like the home side when we go away - playing front-foot football. It is easy to say it, it is harder to implement it, but the lads have gone out and produced.

"I thought the supporters were fantastic again, especially when you consider it is the last Saturday before Christmas. It was a great following from the fans.

"It is so important for us.

"The truly magnificent away support we get on our travels really does inspire the players."
