BURKE NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR

26 April 2016

City defender Reece Burke was rewarded for a fine first full season in professional football by winning the season's Telegraph & Argus/JCT600 Player of the Year award this Tuesday.

Burke, who won seven titles in total on a fruitful night for the West Ham United loanee, beat off close competition from Ben Williams and Tony McMahon to win the club's main award at the annual end-of-season evening.

The 19 year-old received his award from fellow defender and last year's winner, Rory McArdle.

Despite narrowly missing out on the top prize, Williams did have some success of his own on the night, however, after collecting the Players' Player of the Year and Friends of Bradford City Player of the Year awards.

For Burke, his haul of awards fittingly acknowledges a tremendous maiden campaign in senior football. The England U20 international originally joined City on loan towards the end of last August after breaking into the Hammers first team towards the end of the previous season.

After making his debut in a goalless draw away at Barnsley, Burke quickly became a firm favourite with the City faithful thanks to his calm and composed defending, not to mention his coolness on the ball.

Speaking after the awards evening, Burke said: "This was a big surprise for me.

"I thought I would be doing well to win maybe one or two awards, but seven is really amazing. I'm not sure what to say!

"I can't thank the fans and my family enough - this is a big achievement for me."

Along with the main Player of the Year award, Burke was also named City's top player for the 2015/2016 campaign by the East Bierley Bantams, the White Abbey Supporters' Branch and the Shipley Bantams.

The central defender was named the Telegraph & Argus Most Consistent Player of the Year and the Supporters' Trust Young Player of the Year as well.

Other awards on the evening saw striker Reece Webb-Foster named Youth Team Player of the Year and James Hanson's hat-trick against Walsall on Saturday chosen as Pulse Sport's commentary highlight of the year.
