BURTON ALBION CONNECTIONS

3 February 2016

The Bantams travel to current league leaders Burton Albion this Saturday (6 February 2016) for their first Sky Bet League 1 fixture this season in the month of February.

The match will also be City's first visit to the Pirelli Stadium since the memorable second leg of the League 2 Play-Off Semi-Final between the Bantams and the Brewers in May 2013.

Parkinson's men went into that important fixture trailing by a single goal after the first leg at the Coral Windows Stadium.

First half goals from Burton duo Calvin Zola (2) and Robbie Weir put the visitors in a strong position, 3-1 up going into the half time break. City's Garry Thompson pulled a goal back in the second period but the Brewers still held a 3-2 advantage after the first game.

Needing a goal to get back into the contest, City claimed the vital breakthrough in the first half when Nahki Wells netted after taking advantage of some hesitancy in the Burton defence.

A fantastic drive from James Hanson early into the second period then gave Parkinson's side the lead in the semi-final for the very first time.

A penalty from Burton winger Jacques Maghoma drew Burton level overall in the tie but the Bantams were not to be denied as Wells fired City back in front shortly afterwards.

Despite a few nervy moments at the end, City saw the job out to secure a place in the League 2 Play-Off Final and a second trip to Wembley in just three months after their appearance in the Capital One Cup Final earlier in the season.

The Bantams' victory at the Pirelli Stadium sparked joyous scenes in the away end at the full time whistle, with City supporters staying back over half an hour after the game to celebrate with their heroes.

City's goalkeeper on that day in May 2013 - Jon McLaughlin - is expected to line up against the Bantams this weekend after joining the Brewers in the summer of 2014.

Having originally signed for City under former Bantams boss Stuart McCall back in 2008, McLaughlin was the club's longest serving player up until his departure to the Pirelli Stadium.

McLaughlin, who made 138 appearances in total for City, kept goal for the vast majority of Burton's promotion-winning campaign last season.

His League 2 winners' medal goes alongside the Play-Off Final winners' medal he collected during his time at the Coral Windows Stadium.

Another former Bantam expected to feature in Burton's starting XI on Boxing Day is midfielder Tom Naylor.

Naylor, who featured mainly as a defender for City, played for the club on loan from Derby County during the famous 2012/2013 history-makers season.

Continuing the link between City and Burton, the Brewers' loanee attacker Mason Bennett spent a spell on loan at the Coral Windows Stadium at the start of the 2014/2015 campaign.

Despite City have played their home and away fixtures for the season with six other teams in League 1 so far, Saturday's encounter at the Pirelli Stadium will be the first match-up between the Bantams and Burton this season due to the Boxing Day postponement.
