ABBOTT RETURNS TO CITY AS NEW HEAD OF RECRUITMENT

7 July 2016

As reported earlier in the week in the Telegraph & Argus, the football club can now officially confirm the return of Greg Abbott to Bradford City as the Bantams' new Head of Recruitment/Chief Scout.

Abbott will become the latest member of City's backroom staff after leaving a similar role with Cambridge United.

His appointment comes in the same week that Fitness and Conditioning Coach Robert Lossau and Goalkeeping Coach Steve Banks were also unveiled to supporters.

Abbott, of course, needs no introduction to many City fans having played nearly 300 games for the club between 1982 and 1991.

The former team-mate of Bantams boss Stuart McCall has two decades of coaching experience under his belt.

After ten years working in the youth set-up at Leeds United, Abbott enjoyed a lengthy period as Carlisle United's manager and assistant manager.

Abbott has also worked with Milton Keynes Dons and as assistant manager at Notts County before his most recent role at Cambridge.

He said: "I was working for a really good club (Cambridge United) with some really good people but this is one of the clubs you want to work for.

"Bradford is probably one of only a very small number of clubs that could have tempted me away from a really enjoyable position at Cambridge.

"I had a really strong and exciting meeting with Edin (Rahic, joint-owner) and James Mason (Chief Operating Officer) and they are as fiercely determined as I am to keep moving Bradford City forward.

"I have a lot of great memories from being here at Bradford as a player and it is fantastic to be back and to be able to play my part in continuing the good work that has been happening.

"From the day I left to the day I returned, the transformation of this club is nothing short of sensational. The development of the club recently has been fantastic and I want to help keep us progressing upwards."

McCall added: "Greg knows this level and the levels above and below very well.

"He's got great knowledge on a lot of players and his expertise will be invaluable.

"We have already had meetings about potential signings and we are both in agreement about the type of players we want to bring in."

Mason said: "Greg has a real wealth of experience at all levels of the game.

"He has dealt with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson in recent years with regards player sales and loan moves but, equally, he is aware of what is going in and around the Championship, League One & Two and the top of the conference.

"We interviewed Greg along with a number of other high-calibre candidates but his encyclopaedic knowledge of the game really stood out.

"Cambridge's CEO Jez George spoke very highly of him and didn't really want him to leave but understood the professional and emotional pull of Bradford for Greg.

"He obviously knows the club and Stuart well but most importantly Greg is the right man for Bradford City at this time and for the future.

"Greg now has a lot of work to do ahead of the new season.

"We'd urge fans not to expect miracles and immediate signings overnight but Stuart and Greg will be working as hard as they can to bring the right players in throughout this month."
