CITY DRAW OPENING PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY

9 July 2016

Pre-season fixture
Guiseley 1 (Johnson 72)
Bradford City (TRIALIST 75)
Kick off 3:00pm
at Nethermoor

Stuart McCall's Bantams opened up their pre-season programme of fixtures with a 1-1 draw at local neighbours Guiseley AFC this Saturday.

Despite City creating a number of promising chances earlier on, it was Guiseley who took the lead in the second half through former Norwich City striker Oli Johnson.

The Bantams were level just three minutes later, however, when recent summer signing Nicky Law pulled the ball back from a free-kick for a trialist midfielder to crash a fierce drive home from just outside the box.

City's goalscorer on the day was one of five trialists on show for McCall's men in their opening friendly of the summer.

Along with Law, City supporters were able to get their first glimpse of fellow new recruit Nathaniel Knight-Percival as well.

As expected, City played with virtually one different side per half against their National Conference opponents.

After returning to training on Thursday following a minor knee problem, Filipe Morais didn't feature but he was still put through his paces by Fitness & Conditioning Coach Robert Lossau before kick off.

Once the action had started, Mark Marshall threatened during the opening period when he forced Guiseley goalkeeper Dan Atkinson to push behind after an angled drive from the City winger.

James Hanson also tested Atkinson with a shot of his own from a similar position, while the home shot-stopper had to be alert to smother Paul Anderson's close range effort after he'd been teed up by a trialist striker.

Unfortunately for the same forward hopeful, he had to be replaced by Reece Webb-Foster ten minutes before the break after picking up a spot of cramp.

In the second period, Webb-Foster nearly caught out Atkinson with a curling effort from just outside the box that crashed against the top of his bar with the 'keeper stranded.

Webb-Foster's effort was the second to hit the woodwork for City during the game after one of City's trialist midfielders has also struck the bar with a rising drive in the first half.

City continued to threaten the Guiseley goal as the half progressed, with Billy Clarke and Reece Powell denied by Atkinson, before Guiseley themselves were repelled by the frame of the goal.

Michael Rankine's low drive from a free-kick was tipped onto the post by City's trialist goalkeeper for the afternoon.

Guiseley went one better later in the half to take the lead through Johnson after the substitute was put through on goal, the striker opening the scoring by calmly slotting past City's trialist custodian.

The Bantams quickly restored parity in the game, however, when Law teed up one of the Bantams' trialists from a free-kick to crash home the ball with a great first-time effort fifteen minutes from time.
