McCALL | THAT WIN WAS FOR BOBBY

23 November 2016

Bantams boss Stuart McCall was delighted that his players were able to give a fitting tribute to legendary former striker Bobby Campbell by picking up a deserved victory over Northampton Town at the Northern Commercials Stadium this Tuesday evening.

On a night when the club remembered Campbell following his sad passing last week, City's current number nine, James Hanson, popped up in the 56th minute to head home the all-important goal and help the Bantams on the way to a hard-fought 1-0 win.

The goal was no more than City's play had merited after dominating the game for large periods up until that point, although McCall's men did have to survive a late onslaught from the visitors before claiming all three points.

Speaking about the win and Hanson's goal, McCall said: "It was almost written in the stars.

"It was quite fitting that Hans (James Hanson) with that number nine on his back should pop up and get the winner with a header.

"It just shows some things are meant to be. I'm sure the big man (Bobby Campbell) will be looking down and smiling - this one was definitely for him.

"I thought it was the perfect night really. The tribute for Bobby before the match from the club and the supporters was spot-on.

"The game itself, we were just lacking the goals.

"We played some really good stuff at times and got into some great positions. I really enjoyed our play.

"It was a bit nervy at the end but we still ran out deserved winners.

"Northampton made it difficult for us, no doubt, they put (Marc) Richards on in the second half with (Alex) Revell and we had to defend well.

"Doyley has pulled off one great save near the end.

"We would have liked to have got more than one goal to kill the game off earlier but hopefully the fans have gone home entertained."

As City looked to see the game out in the final stages, McCall brought on Rory McArdle for the impressive Josh Cullen.

The City chief explained: "Josh got a bit of a bang and he has had to limp off.

"He was struggling, but they were certainly going more direct as well, so we decided to bring Rory on and put Romain (Vincelot) just in front of the back four.

"Hopefully he (Josh) will be ok for Saturday."

Billy Clarke remained sidelined for the Northampton game due to a calf problem while Timothee Dieng also missed the visit of the Cobblers picking up a knee injury.

McCall added: "With Clarkey and Tim, we won't know about them for Saturday until later in the week.

"He (Tim) got a bang on his knee twenty minutes towards the end at Southend.

"He ran it off and thought nothing more about it until Sunday morning when he woke up and it felt stiff.

"He could run on it in training but he couldn't really strike the ball.

"It is something we will have to monitor but hopefully it isn't anything too sinister."
