Meredith has missed City's last four games following an ankle problem but the Australian is in line to feature in at least some part of the final Northern Group C match at the Globe Arena.
The Bantams visit Morecambe on Wednesday knowing that a single point will be enough to secure top spot in the group and progression into the knock-out stages of this season's competition.
City assistant Kenny Black said: "He (James Meredith) trained very hard last week but we thought Saturday was just a little bit too soon for him.
"He's trained Monday and today (Tuesday) and he's had no reaction so he'll take his place in the squad.
"How long we play him, or if we play him at all, remains to be seen but it is certainly good to have him back."
With Colin Doyle currently away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, German shot-stopper Rouven Sattelmaier is expected to start in goal for City against the Shrimps.
Black said: "We've been delighted with Colin's consistency since he's arrived at the club and he certainly deserves his call-up.
"This now gives Rouven an opportunity to come in.
"We don't have any worries about putting him in - he's done fine in the games we've played him in so far in this competition.
"We'll be looking for more of the same from what we've seen of Rouven."
After making a number of changes for Saturday's Emirates FA Cup tie with Accrington Stanley, City are expected to once again give members of their squad a chance for some game-time.
This could mean a first ever senior start for young defender James King.
King turned professional with City back in 2015 after coming through the club's youth ranks but he has yet to feature for the first team due in part to a couple of serious injuries over the last twelve months.
Black added: "He's (James King) been unlucky with injuries in the past but he's been training well recently and deserves his chance.
"He has had to be patient at times this season but this competition gives us an opportunity to put him in the side and for him to show us what he's made of.
"Tom Windle, Ellis Hudson and Kwame Boateng are all players we have introduced recently into the side in this competition.
"Our intention is certainly to mix and match in the game with some younger players coming into the team alongside some of the more experienced lads."
