SHEFFIELD UNITED CONNECTIONS

19 October 2016

The Bantams host Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United this Saturday (22 October 2016) in an eagerly-anticipated fixture at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

The match will be City's fourth home encounter with the Blades since the club's return to Sky Bet League One in 2013.

Last season's fixture at Valley Parade ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Goals from James Meredith and Devante Cole saw City surge into a two-goal lead but an unfortunate own goal via Meredith and a leveller from Billy Sharp ensured a share of the spoils for the visitors.

The game was the fifth 2-2 draw between the two sides since 1998.

With the Sky Sports cameras in the ground once again, United ran out 2-0 winners at Valley Parade the previous campaign, although City certainly weren't helped in the game by the sending off of skipper Stephen Darby just after the restart.

At 1-0 in the game midway through the second period, Jason Kennedy missed a golden opportunity to equalise for the ten-men when he headed narrowly wide from close range.

A loose touch by Andrew Davies due to an unfortunate bobble off the pitch seven minutes from the end then allowed Marc McNulty, now on loan with the Bantams, to race through and seal the points for the visitors.

The season before that - the 2013/2014 campaign - saw City triumphant in the home game, however, thanks to a well-taken double from Nahki Wells in front of over 18,000 fans at a vibrant Valley Parade.

McNulty isn't the only player in the current Bantams camp with Sheffield United links.

City midfielder Nicky Law started his professional career at Bramall Lane, making his debut for them in back in 2005.

Matthew Kilgallon enjoyed three years with Sheffield United, playing over 100 times for them between 2007 and 2010.

Billy Clarke had a brief loan spell with the Blades from Blackpool back in 2011.

Tony McMahon also represented the red and white side of Sheffield from 2012 to 2014.

Looking into the United camp, two of their current players have previously featured for the Bantams.

Sheffield United defender Jake Wright came through the youth ranks with City.

Keighley-born Wright was given his maiden professional contract in 2005 but only made one senior appearance for the club.

Utility player Reece Brown was loaned out for a month to Valley Parade back in 2010 while he was at Manchester United.

On the managerial side, Bantams boss Stuart McCall has a number of connections with the South Yorkshire club.

McCall ended his playing days and also starting his coaching career with the Blades.

The current City chief actually scored a winning goal against the Bantams for United in a 2-1 away win for the visitors at Valley Parade back in September 2013.

McCall's opposite number at the weekend, Chris Wilder, has played for both clubs as well.

Like McCall, Wilder has a great affinity with his current employers having supported Sheffield United growing up.

Having started his career with his boyhood club, Wilder eventually joined City in 1997.

Wilder spent a season with the club before rejoining United for a second time.

Down the years, there have been a large number of notable players to have played for both clubs in the recent past.

They include Bobby Campbell, Dean Windass, Chris Kamara, Andy Gray, Rob Kozluk, Kyel Reid Gus Uhlenbeek, Simon Francis, Keith Gillespie, John Egan, Dean Saunders, Mark Yeates, Peter Beagrie, Danny Cadamarteri, Bruce Dyer, Michael Boulding, Richard Edghill, Lee Hendrie, Billy Paynter, Chris O'Grady, Kyle Nix, Marcel Seip, Steven Davies and Jon Stead.
