McCALL GLAD TO GET THINGS UNDERWAY

11 July 2017

Bantams boss Stuart McCall declared himself pleased with City's opening day in Austria.

McCall's men took part in first full day of training at their Austrian base this Tuesday, completing two intensive sessions in the picturesque region of Kleinwalsertal.

Although the group had to contend with changing weather conditions at times, City's full twenty-two man playing squad managed to get through both sessions.

McCall said: "Everything has gone well.

"We had to change the training time of the afternoon session slightly to avoid the worst of the rain, but we've still managed to get two good sessions in.

"We had a football-based session in the morning, finishing it off with some gym work with Shorty (fitness coach Chris Short).

"In the afternoon, it was another hard session for the lads with the footballs, and then some running to finish off at the end.

"We will be back out on the training pitch tomorrow (Wednesday) but it is forecast a bit more rain.

"It is a good temperature for the lads, however, and they are working hard.

"We will probably give the lads one session tomorrow, maybe give them the chance to have a look around the local area in the afternoon.

"It will be back to two sessions on Thursday though, and then possibly one again on the Friday ahead of the game (vs TV Echterdingen) on the Saturday.

"The lads know there is no magic formula that gets you fit and in shape, it is all about putting in the hard work while we've over here."

Including this Tuesday, McCall and his coaching staff will have four consecutive days on the training ground while in Austria to work with the players.

The City chief feels this sustained period of training for the group will be more beneficial than playing a midweek game against local opposition.

He added: "At this stage of pre-season, this week on the training ground is vitally important.

"Unlike in an actual match, you can stop things and explain things on the training pitch.

"We can get on the pitch, coach the lads and let them know what we are after.

"Obviously you can only really do that in a match environment at half time or at the end of a game.

"When we get ourselves fitter, stronger and more mentally-prepared, we will be ready for our other pre-season games coming up."
