McCALL | TARGETS WE WANT TO ACHIEVE FROM NEWCASTLE GAME

24 July 2017

Bantams boss Stuart McCall says there will be a number of things he will be looking from his players when Newcastle United arrive at the Northern Commercials Stadium on Wednesday.

Following Saturday's friendly with Sunderland, McCall's men next entertain fellow North East side Newcastle in their latest pre-season fixture on Wednesday evening (7:30pm).

Rafael Benitez's side drew 1-1 at Preston North End at the weekend, fielding the likes of internationals Grant Hanley, Jonjo Shelvey, Christian Atsu, Mo Diame and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Toon Army fans' favourites Jack Colback, Ayose Perez and Dwight Gayle, plus recent signing Jacob Murphy, all featured from the bench at Deepdale.

Talent like that at Newcastle's disposal means City could be in for a stern test of their credentials, and McCall believes there is plenty the Bantams can get out of the match.

McCall said: "We go into Wednesday night knowing that we are going to be up against players worth tens of millions of pounds, so we have to be realistic.

"Equally though, we still want to go out there and put in the strongest display possible.

"The result might not necessarily go our way Wednesday, but we still have things we want to get out of the game.

"We have a great relationship with Newcastle. They allowed us to bring Alex (Gilliead) and Haris Vuckic to the club last season.

"We obviously now have Alex back here as well for this season.

"We look forward to welcoming them to the stadium on Wednesday and to a challenging encounter.

"Hopefully it is one that we can get plenty out of.

"Although we won't be up against the standard of Newcastle's quality once the league season starts, there is still the opportunity to use this fixture to keep building things up ahead of the new campaign."

Dominic Poleon suffered an ankle injury in Saturday's game with Sunderland and will be assessed ahead of the Newcastle encounter.

Timothee Dieng also a doubt due to the same calf problem that has ruled him out of City's last two friendlies.

Charlie Wyke (hamstring) continues to be sidelined, although Alex Jones should return against Newcastle following a minor groin problem.
