Alex Jones' first goal in front of the home supporters helped Stuart McCall's Bantams to a hard-fought victory over Peterborough United at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

After grabbing his maiden City goal at Port Vale last weekend, Jones was on hand to scramble the ball in midway through the first period after Mark Marshall's driven cross-come-shot had been repelled by Posh 'keeper Luke McGee.

Initially it was felt Charlie Wyke had scored the goal after he fired the ball home shortly afterwards but referee Mr Brett Huxtable confirmed post-match that Jones' effort had already crossed the line.

Before Jones' opener, the clearest chance of a scrappy first period came when Marshall forced a save out of McGee with a strike from the edge of the box.

Peterborough had chances of their own in the opening half, with Marcus Maddison in particular going close when he fired into the side-netting from a free-kick.

Looking to press home their advantage, City grew stronger after the break, although Peterborough striker Tom Nichols could have levelled shortly after the restart but for an important goal-saving block from Rory McArdle.

Nichols also fired narrowly wide with a shot from outside the box just past the hour mark, while City 'keeper Colin Doyle had to block an effort from Maddison inside the box later in the half.

Despite those chances though, City still looked more in control in the second half, and McCall's men went close themselves through both Josh Cullen and Tony McMahon.

Substitute Timothee Dieng could have sealed the game for the Bantams late on went he was played into space inside the box but the Frenchman fired narrowly over.

City had to deal with McGee leaving his goal to go up for an injury time corner but the Bantams hung for a deserved clean sheet and an important success.

67min: YELLOW CARD - Michael Bostwick is booked for bringing down Hiwula just outside the area.
66min: Superb foot-work from Cullen buys the midfielder some shooting space in the box but his left-footed drive flashes wide of the side-netting by McGee's near post.

61min: Nichols turns away from Cullen just outside the box before whipping in a fierce drive that narrowly whistles past Doyle's far post.
60min: Wyke glances a header comfortably wide of the far post from Romain Vincelot's in-swinging cross.
60min: Marshall latches onto Knight-Percival's pass over the top but his cross into the six yard box from a threatening pobyline goes over the head of both Wyke and Jones.
59min: YELLOW CARD - Grant is booked for bringing down Gilliead as the City winger looked to move forward deep into Peterborough territory.
55min: YELLOW CARD - Hughes is booked for giving a foul away over by City's right wing. McMahon delivery into the box from the resulting free-kick eventually bounces through to McGee over by the far post despite pressure from Knight-Percival.
51min: City nearly double their lead in almost comical fashion! Grant is in position to cut-out a Jones delivery into the middle from the byline. The Peterborough midfielder is forced back towards his own goal, however, by pressure from a couple of City players and eventually a panicked McGee ends up smashing the ball against Grant right in front of his own goal-line. Luckily for the Peterborough 'keeper, the ball spins past the post and out for only a City corner.
48min: Big chance for Peterborough at the start of the second half! Mackail-Smith charges down a Knight-Percival attempted clearance just as Doyle loses his footing. Mackail-Smith squares the ball to the unmarked Nichols in the middle but McArdle makes himself big to crucially block the striker's shot for goal.
46min: The Bantams restart the match.
HT: Bradford City 1 Peterborough United 0
45min: There will be two minutes of time added on at the end of the first half.
42min: YELLOW CARD - Nichols is booked for deliberate handball as he looked to try and keep the ball in play by the byline while attacking towards City's goal.
40min: With his third free-kick of the afternoon, Maddison fires into the side-netting by Doyle's near post with an effort from a few yards outside the penalty box.
39min: YELLOW CARD - Knight-Percival is booked for bringing down Maddison as the winger surged towards City's penalty area.
38min: Taylor sprints clear down Peterborough's left wing after moving away from McMahon. As he moves forward in City territory, Taylor looks to play the ball into the box but the centre is just out of the reach of Mackail-Smith in the middle and Doyle is able to gather up possession.
32min: Smith fires over for Peterborough with a rising shot from distance.
30min: Marshall wriggles away from the attentions of two Peterborough defenders to burst into the visitors' penalty area. The winger stands up a cross from the right but the ball is just over the head of Wyke in the middle, with the striker then flagged offside.
28min: Taylor looks to play Mackail-Smith into space inside the penalty area but McArdle is on hand to block out the danger just as the latter looked to shoot for goal.
24min: GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Bradford City 1 Peterborough United 0 - The Bantams have the lead midway through the first period! Marshall's cross-come-shot is pushed out by McGee into the path of Alex Jones. The striker looks to bundle the ball over the line before Charlie Wyke eventually is on hand to smash home! Despite initial reports suggesting otherwise, Jones is credited with the goal.
22min: Tom Nichols jumps ahead of McMahon to reach Michael Smith's searching ball into the box from deep but the striker's soft header bounces through to Doyle.
20min: Chris Forrester narrowly beats Alex Gilliead to the ball outside City's penalty area. Forrester prods for goal but his first time effort rolls harmlessly through to Doyle.
19min: After earlier shooting from a similar position, Maddison elects to cross with another Peterborough free-kick from outside the box. The ball looks to pick out Anthony Grant over by the far post but McMahon and Doyle are able to do enough to see the danger out.
16min: Maddison's quick corner into the path of Taylor results in the attacker firing forwards on the half-volley from the edge of the box. With Taylor being closed down at the time, the effort seemed slightly rushed and the ball sails comfortably over Colin Doyle's crossbar.
15min: Paul Taylor produces a neat trick to get away from McMahon down Peterborough's left flank. The Posh attacker crosses into the box with the outside of his boot but the centre is just out of the reach of Craig Mackail-Smith, who is lurking over by the far post.
12min: McMahon's searching free-kick from wide towards the far post looks to pick out an unmarked Knight-Percival but Andrew Hughes is crucially in the right position to head behind for a corner. McMahon's delivery into the box from the resulting corner is sent wide via a glancing header from McArdle.
10min: Mark Marshall goes for goal with an angled drive from around the edge of the box and Peterborough 'keeper Luke McGee has to push the ball away by his near post.
6min: Maddison's free-kick towards goal deflects off the Bantams' wall and out for a corner. Ryan Tafazolli is lurking from Maddison's delivery from the following corner but he fails to connect properly with a header and the ball rolls out over by the far side for a goal kick.
2min: Marcus Maddison dispossesses Tony McMahon before crossing low into the middle from Peterborough's left flank. The centre looks a testing one, and Nathaniel Knight-Percival has to nudge behind for a corner. Maddison puts the resulting set-piece delivery into the box but a combination of Rory McArdle and Josh Cullen manages to get the ball clear.
0min: Peterborough kick off the match. The Bantams will attack towards the T L Dallas Stand end in the first period.
