McCALL | DRAW PROBABLY A FAIR RESULT

1 March 2017

Bantams boss Stuart McCall felt that both sides probably deserved something from an entertaining encounter at the Northern Commercials Stadium, as City drew 2-2 with Milton Keynes Dons this Tuesday evening.

A penalty from Tony McMahon and a Charlie Wyke header just before the break - his fourth goal in six games for City - twice brought McCall's men level following a topsy-turvy opening period against the Dons.

The Bantams controlled possession for long periods following the restart but the visitors always looked a threat going forward on the counter-attack.

McCall said: "It was another entertaining home game certainly.

"I think we can look back on probably three-quarters of the drawn home games this season and feel we deserved to win, but tonight (Tuesday) is probably a fair point against a good side.

"You only have to take one look at their squad, we always knew this would be a tricky game.

"They made it difficult for us, playing five at the back and looking to hit us on the counter-attack.

"The manner in which we lost the two goals is very disappointing though.

"You can point the finger and ask for a little better from some of the goals we have conceded recently, but there was nothing we could do with their goals tonight.

"The first one is clearly a deflection, nothing (Colin) Doyley could do with it, and then it is a fluke really for the second one.

"A cross that ends up hitting both posts before going in - the lad probably couldn't do it again if he tried it another one hundred times.

"With that in mind then, it was good character from the lads to bounce back the way we did.

"We could easily have won the game in the second period, but they also had chances as well on the break.

"We went for it after the break, pushing our three attackers onto their three centre halves and pushing our full backs right onto their wing backs.

"It left us two versus two at the back at times but we had to be brave, we were going for the win.

"We'll take this point, but it will only be a good point if we can claim the victory on Saturday (vs Peterborough United)."

After suffering with illness over the weekend, Wyke claimed his twenty-second goal of the 2016/2017 campaign with the Bantams' second equaliser of the night.

Mark Marshall, who missed last Saturday's victory at Port Vale, was an unused sub for the MK Dons match, with McCall explaining why he felt introducing him into the action probably wasn't the best decision.

McCall said: "You are looking at the bench with fifteen minutes to go and you could easily think that Marshy was a good option (to bring on).

"On a cold night though, for him to come off the bench and use his pace straight away, especially after suffering a hamstring problem recently, you are always running the risk of something going wrong.

"You only have to look at their lad (Chuks Aneke) who came on in the second period and went off with a hamstring injury.

"We thought about trying to get Jordy (Hiwula) on the pitch but you had Charlie (Wyke) on there, Alex Gilliead looking bright against their defence, and we'd just brought (Alex) Jonesey on as well.

"With Charlie, it turns out he's had a bit of a chest infection.

"He was always touch and go for tonight as a result.

"We thought of starting Jonesey instead but we knew he'd only be able to play 45 minutes or so after being out for nearly a month previously.

"We felt Charlie might only be able to do 75 minutes but he got on with it, and it was a terrific towering header for his goal."
