BANGLA BANTAMS CHAIRMAN WINS ASIAN FOOTBALL AWARD

15 November 2017

The chairman of the Bradford City supporters' group - Bangla Bantams - was awarded on Tuesday night at the fourth Asian Football Awards.

Humayun Islam, who is the co-founder of Bangla Bantams and Shapla FC, won the 'Behind The Scenes' Award, beating off competition from fellow nominees from Arsenal and West Ham United.

Humayun won the award ahead of Rashid Abba, education manager at West Ham United, and Nav Singh, sports scientist at Arsenal, due to his outstanding work in the local community.

The Bangla Bantams and Shapla Sports were formed in 2015 to help the local South Asian Community promote and increase sports participation – for both boys and girls – in the Bradford area.

Both projects were set up with help from the Fans For Diversity (FFD) campaign fund, which is jointly run by Kick It Out and the Football Supporters Federation (FSF).

The award for Humayun comes less than a year after the Bangla Bantams became the winners of the inaugural Fans For Diversity award at the Football Supporters' Federation Awards.

Bangla Bantams fought off competition from five other supporters' groups to clinch the award following their outstanding work promoting inclusion within the Bradford community.

The Asian Football Awards, which are supported by The Football Association, were held this year at The Grange St Paul's Hotel in London.

The Asian Football Awards (AFA) were created in 2012 to reward and recognise Asian people in the football industry. The aim is to provide a platform for Asian people to promote their skills while also showing the footballing world that coaches, volunteers, players, administrators and fans are Asians who love the game.
