McCALL | WE SHOWED GREAT SPIRIT TO COME BACK

12 September 2017

Bantams boss Stuart McCall hailed the spirit and work-rate of his players, as City fought back to claim a dramatic late point in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Oxford United.

Despite the Bantams leading for long periods through Omari Patrick's fine curling effort from distance, Oxford looked to have snatched the win when Joe Rothwell fired the hosts in front with only three minutes of normal time remaining.

City's inspirational skipper Romain Vincelot had the final say, however, powering in a thumping header in the last seconds of injury time from Nicky Law's cross.

McCall said: "We've come to a side who are playing some good football and matched them all the way.

"It would have been extremely harsh if we'd come away from the game without anything.

"At 1-0, we've controlled the game and kept them in check for long periods.

"Omari (Patrick) even has a chance to make it 2-0 when he hits the angle of post and bar.

"We've looked reasonably comfortable until their goals, (Colin) Doyley's only really had long-range shots to save.

"I've been told that the initial shot for their equaliser takes a deflection, wrong-footing Doyley and allowing their lad to score on the rebound.

"Even at 1-1 though, we've brought Dom (Poleon) and Shay (McCartan) to try and win the game.

"I'm delighted with the effort, commitment and quality of the lads tonight (Tuesday).

"Another positive performance after Saturday (vs Peterborough United) and four points from two tough away games.

"The spirit and togetherness of the lads was there for all to see at the end, none more so than from our captain (Romain Vincelot).

"His leveller came in almost the same place where he probably should have got a penalty in the dying seconds of last season's game here at Oxford.

"For the effort the lads put in, it would have been so harsh not to have taken anything.

"It is a great feeling to get this result.

"The togetherness and the spirit on show from the lads, plus the good attacking football, meant there was plenty of positive things to take from this game.

"We've looking more like a team now."
