McCALL | WE GROUND OUT THE VICTORY

30 September 2017

Bantams boss Stuart McCall was pleased to see his side return to winning ways this Saturday - although he knows they can perform much better.

City bounced from their midweek defeat at the hands of Fleetwood Town to claim a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

First half goals from Charlie Wyke and Nathaniel Knight-Percival gave McCall's men a handy advantage at the break.

The Bantams were required to dig deep after the interval, though, as Doncaster pushed forward in search of a way back into the game.

While City were far from their best for long periods, McCall's side showed enough desire and determination to see out the game and claim victory and a clean-sheet.

The Doncaster win was City's fifth win out of seven as a busy month of September finally came to a close.

McCall said: "I'm pleased with the three points, but I'm not entirely happy with the performance if I'm being honest.

"We were gritty and did all the things needed to grind out the result in the second period but we didn't really play going forward.

"Our play in possession and our decision-making in attacking positions was poor.

"The effort was clearly there but we know we needed to be better in possession today (Saturday).

"We certainly ground out this victory without being at our best.

"There is definitely things we could have done better but what we have done well is show a great desire to protect our lead.

"We got the blocks in, won those second balls and showed a good work-ethic - we just didn't have the quality on the ball in possession.

"Overall, we have to be pleased with our two goals and the three points against a good Doncaster side.

"The month of September had been outstanding for us. We've won all five Saturday games.

"To take sixteen points out of twenty-one has been a fantastic effort from the group of players."

Opening goalscorer Wyke was one of three players brought into the side by McCall from the Fleetwood defeat, with Paul Taylor and Dominic Poleon also handed starting berths.

For Taylor, it was his first start in the league for the Bantams since his summer move to Valley Parade.

McCall added: "Tayls has been unfortunate so far this season.

"He's had a couple of little injuries so far this season but he looked sharp the other night (vs Fleetwood).

"He's also looked sharp in training over the last ten days or so.

"He deserved his chance.

"To be honest, we also thought Doncaster might play with a back three like they did in the (Carabao) cup game earlier this season.

"That would have given us a real chance to play a front four right up against them they didn't end up doing that.

"He (Paul Taylor) is similar to (Alex) Jonesey and Shay (McCartan) really, you would see better from him after a run of games.

"The only problem with playing two up top and two wingers as we did today, you lose a little bit of control in the middle of the park."
