McCALL PRAISES CITY'S RESILIENCY

23 September 2017

Bantams boss Stuart McCall was full of praise for City's desire to dig in and see the job through in Saturday's victory at Northampton Town.

Tony McMahon's superb curling effort direct from a free-kick in the first period proved enough for McCall's men to claim a 1-0 win and extend their unbeaten start to their away fixtures this season.

McMahon's goal ten minutes before the interval came in a half where City created the greater scoring chances against their hosts.

Northampton threw bodies forward after the break in an attempt to claw themselves back into the game, but City stood strong against the Cobblers' physical threat for a clean sheet and the win.

McCall said: "I thought we played some really good stuff in the first half and could have scored before we did.

"Dom (Poleon) and Charlie (Wyke) have had chances after good moves so we could have gone into the break with an even greater lead.

"Second half saw us pegged back by a strong and physical Northampton side, who have been buoyed by the arrival of their new manager.

"I knew we would have to defend well today (Saturday). They have a number of tall and strong players in their side.

"We were looking into further changes in the second period but Charlie (Wyke) and Gilly (Alex Gilliead) do an important job for us defensively as well as going forward.

"We expected the pressure that came out way in the second period and we dealt with it well.

"Whenever a side is losing at home, you know they are going to throw everything at you.

"From the goalkeeper to the forwards though, we dealt with everything.

"Although they had a couple of late chances, (Colin) Doyley hasn't really had a save to make.

"What he has done though is command his area well and claim crosses when he needed to.

"The only criticism I would have is that we could have looked after the ball better and counter-attacked better."

While McMahon had been involved in seven City goals already this season ahead of this Saturday due to his fine deliveries from wide areas, his match-winner at Northampton was the right back's first goal of his own this campaign.

McCall added: "Gilly has done brilliantly to carry the ball forward 40-50 yards deep into their half for the foul.

Once we got the free-kick, we fancied him (Tony McMahon) from that position.

"They had a big wall but their 'keeper gave him a lot to aim at. As soon as it left his foot and cleared the wall, we knew it was heading in.

"It was a terrific free-kick and a fitting goal to win the game."
