We are delighted that our friend and colleague Mick Russell, Commercial Executive, has become an ambassador of Know The Score charity after recently beating Bowel Cancer. Now Mick is encouraging other Bantams fans to spread the message and get tested for the disease.
We caught up with Mick this week and he has said: “lots of people ignore these tests and if you do the test you get through the post, and like me you are found to have a negative result, I would say there is nothing to worry about. The nurses and medical teams are able to cure it quickly due to it being found in the early stages.”
Mick has been part of the Commercial team at the club for 6 years now and was diagnosed in August of 2017 after taking a test he had received through the post. He is keen to promote this to other Bradford fans and others beyond the club.
“I’m in a privileged position, I work within an environment where I can spread the word to upwards of 20,000 people. I can use my knowledge and experience and pass that on to the fans and beyond and I’m happy to offer help and support to anyone who is in a similar situation. I’ve been through it and I know what people’s mind-set is so I am more than willing to lend a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on and listen to their thoughts.”
Mick’s diagnosis was a particular shock as he explains, “I have always been a fit and healthy person eating the right things and in recent years, I’ve been running roughly 20 kilometres a week as well as taking part in 10 kilometre organised races so it just came to prove that it can happen to anybody.”
Mick is taking his love for running and combining it with his role of an ambassador to raise awareness for Know The Score the Bowel cancer charity as well as raising funds for Macmillan by running the Manchester 10K in May.
