McCALL'S YEOVIL PRE-MATCH PRESSER | WHAT WE'VE LEARNED

4 January 2018

Bantams boss Stuart McCall held his usual pre-match press event this Thursday ahead of City's trip to Yeovil Town in the Emirates FA Cup.

Let's take a look at some of the main headlines from what the City manager had to say before Saturday's third round tie at Huish Park.

McCall looking for cup progression
The City chief says the Bantams will be looking to secure their place in the fourth round draw when they take on Yeovil Town - but he is wary of a potential cup upset. McCall said: "This is naturally a competition we want to go as far as we can in. We made it clear from day one that we wanted to do well in the FA Cup this year. Playing a side in a division below us, it gives us the chance to progress should we play at the top of our game. We know that the game, especially with it being away from home, is a banana-skin though. Yeovil are struggling a bit in the league, so they might see this tie as a breath of fresh air for them. They are a young and hungry squad, so we will have to be totally committed for this game. We want to get ourselves in the hat for the next round. We will be down as favourites but we are wary about the history of cup shocks as well. We have to be mentally focused for this one. We have to treat this one like a league fixture and look to impose ourselves on the game."

McCall on Robinson deal
Away from the action on the field, City's Tyrell Robinson was rewarded for his fine recent form by being handed a new two-and-a-half-year contract during the week. McCall said: "He has worked very hard on his fitness this season. He is learning his game and improving all the time down that left hand side of the pitch. His pace going forward is obviously an asset, but he is working on the defensive side of his game as well. His new deal is a reward for his recent efforts - he know he must continue to work hard if he wants further rewards though. His aim is to be a regular first team player for us."

Success for Shay
McCall had words of praise for Shay McCartan after the forward helped City to back-to-back victories in recent days with a goal in both games. McCartan's goals come after a recall into the side for the Northern Ireland international following a prolonged period on the bench in the first half of the season. McCall said: "He was unfortunate at the start of the season. He scored at Walsall and then got called up into the Northern Ireland squad. He then missed more games with an injury, and during that time saw the likes of Dominic Poleon and Paul Taylor come into the side and score goals. He has scored two tremendous goals (against Oxford and Fleetwood) now, which is no surprise because he is a brilliant finisher. I'm sure he will be approaching Saturday's game in a real confident frame of mind."

Quartet back in contention
McCall has revealed that Tyrell Robinson and Matthew Kilgallon will both be in City's squad for the match at Yeovil Town after the pair missed the New Year's Day fixture at Fleetwood Town. McCall says Adam Thompson is also back to full fitness after being troubled with illness at Fleetwood. There was even a welcome return to training for Dominic Poleon this week, with the striker set to make up part of the Bantams' travelling party to Somerset this weekend. McCall said: "Good news for both Tyrell and Thommo (Adam Thompson), their illnesses have cleared up now and they are training. Killa (Matthew Kilgallon) is back training as well after his little break. Dom Poleon was also out there training. He has worked hard on his fitness this week, so he will be added to the squad for this weekend."

Reeves is out; McMahon doubtful
Although McCall's squad assessment was generally positive, especially in terms of Poleon's return, the City chief did confirm that Jake Reeves will still miss out at Huish Park. McCall also said Tony McMahon is listed as a doubt after taking a knock to his thigh at Fleetwood. McCall said: "Reevesy will still be out. Tony McMahon is a slight doubt - he got an early knock on Monday but carried on. He is 50-50 at the moment. We will judge him tomorrow (Friday) but I know he will be desperate to play. There is a bit of tiredness and stiffness around (the squad) after two games in three days earlier in the week, but I'm sure the lads will be energised and ready to go come Saturday."
