David Hopkin praised his side’s efforts following last night’s Checkatrade Trophy trip to Barnsley.

A impressive David Ball opener set City on track but two goals from George Moncur denied the Bantams progression to the next round.

Head coach Hopkin was left frustrated following the full-time whistle, though insisted he was pleased with the amount of chances created.

He said: “David Ball scored a fantastic goal, he took it really well and we are delighted for him.

“He had plenty of other chances as well. Their keeper had to make three or four really good saves to deny him more goals.

“David works very hard and his fitness levels are improving. He has fantastic quality on the ball.

“After the goal we controlled the game but switched off in vital moments. They scored from some poor defending.

“They came out and attacked for the first 10 minutes of the second half and scored the crucial goal.

“We then got back in the driving seat, controlled the game and created numerous chances. We just needed to be far more clinical.”

There was some controversy in the 90 minutes, as Kai Bruenker had a header ruled out by the linesman - after a spilled back-pass appeared to cross the line.

“Kai’s header was onside and I have watched it again,” added Hopkin.

“The keeper has dropped the ball over the line, which was another goal, and then Jack Payne has hit the crossbar from the free-kick that should have never been.

“Overall, though, we were punished for making mistakes and they have scored two goals on the back of them.

“We probably created 17 or 18 good chances and it shows we need to be better in front of goal.

“I was pretty pleased with the performance and the chances created but I am disappointed to be out of the Checkatrade Trophy.

The Bantams return to Sky Bet League One action on Saturday, travelling to the ABAX Stadium to take on Peterborough United.
