HOPKIN BACKING BANTAMS TO RESPOND

City boss David Hopkin has called for the Bantams to bounce back tomorrow evening when Sky Bet League Two Oldham Athletic visit the Northern Commercials Stadium.

In what is Hopkin’s side’s second Checkatrade Trophy outing, following last month’s penalty success over Everton Under-21s, the Bantams will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record in the competition.

City enter the 7.30pm contest on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland - and Hopkin is confident the Bantams will respond.

“The good thing about playing on a Tuesday night is that you get to go again, very quickly,” said the head coach.

“We have to take the positives from Saturday, get back out there and try and get a result.

“We will need to be ready for what Oldham will bring. Hopefully, we can kick on from Saturday, build on what we did well, and go into Saturday against Accrington with some momentum.

“I think we started the Sunderland game on the front foot. We were positive, going up against a very good team.

“We were disappointed to be 1-0 down at half-time. Their goal took a deflection off a hand and the referee gives the goal - and half apologises.

“We knew we had to score the next goal and we did that, which was a real positive.

“To concede just minutes after equalising was disappointing. We need to do better than that.

“Jack (Payne) was brave enough to step up and take the penalty. It didn’t come off for us but he then went on to have two or three great shots.

“There were plenty of positives to take from the game but the dressing room was a disappointing place to be, as we thought we should have taken something from the game.

“We matched Sunderland for most of the game. They have some quality players, who caused us some problems.

“The City supporters, who were phenomenal on Saturday, can see we are mentally tougher. We are competing with the best sides in this division and will pick up results.”

Meanwhile, tomorrow evening’s match will be a pay-on-the-gate fixture.

Admission is priced at £10 (adults), £5 (concessions) and £1 (juniors).
