Gary Bowyer insists the City faithful can play a "massive role" tomorrow - when the Bantams take on Cambridge United in their 2019/20 season opener.

The Bantams boss is expecting a challenging first fixture back in Sky Bet League Two and Bowyer is hoping to witness a fantastic atmosphere when the new campaign gets underway.

Bowyer said: “We are going to need to stick together this season because there will be times where we need our supporters to get right behind us.

“On Saturday, I have no doubt there will be periods where we will be under the cosh a bit and we will need their support to keep us going.

“The challenge ahead is a very tough one. We face a very well-organised Cambridge side.

“It is a two-way thing. We hope to give our fantastic supporters things to cheer about this season and hope they can back us all the way, in return."

Bowyer believes a great deal of progress has been made, in terms of the club "reconnecting" with its supporter base.

Work began during pre-season and the City chief insists it will continue throughout the course of the season.

He added: “It is difficult for me to compare this dressing room with the one last season because I was not here when the mood inside the camp was said to be an unhealthy one.

“We understood the need to reconnect with the fans over the summer, putting fans’ forums on and holding our annual Fans’ Open Day.

“A lot of the things we have put out on social media have made supporters realise how proud they are to represent Bradford City. We want to have a really good go this year, on all fronts.

“We obviously want to be competitive on the pitch, but if we can maintain high standards in every department then we will be heading in the right direction.”

Bowyer’s men meet the Cambridgeshire outfit at the Utilita Energy Stadium on Saturday, with the action getting underway from 3.00pm.
