BOWYER HAILS CITY'S CHARACTER FOLLOWING STEVENAGE SUCCESS

City boss Gary Bowyer was buoyed by the battling effort his Bantams displayed in Tuesday's hard-fought 1-0 victory at Stevenage.

An own goal from Stevenage skipper Tom Soares - three minutes before the break - coupled with a disciplined and determined display from those in claret and amber, ensured City collected their first away win of the season at the Lamex Stadium.

Following on from last Saturday's home win over Oldham Athletic, the Bantams' success against Stevenage made it back-to-back victories for Bowyer's men.

Along with the three-point haul, City's positive evening in Hertfordshire saw them pick up their third clean sheet from their four opening Sky Bet League Two fixtures and moved the Bantams up into second spot.

Bowyer said: "It was a brilliant effort from the lads tonight (Tuesday).

"The spirit, desire, determination and mentality was outstanding.

"We know we didn't play at our prettiest, but we dug in and showed the character that was needed to get the result.

"On a day when we weren't quite our best on the ball, the question is always asked can you still do enough to get over the line.

"I think the phrase is 'grind it out' but it was more than that.

"We showed the old-fashioned values that you need in football.

"I wasn't the silkest of footballers, so I enjoy those sort of wins all the more because you have to dig in.

"Credit to Stevenage, they put a lot of balls into our box, but I felt we dealt with them all but for a couple of moments.

"This is a physical and competitive league. Balls are pumped into your box, and you have to stand up to it. It is part of the game.

"Nights like this strengthen that belief and mentality within the group."

Despite the near 350-mile round trip, City's packed away end at Broadhall Way certainly played their part - something that wasn't missed by the Bantams boss.

Bowyer added: "It was an unbelievable turnout from our supporters tonight.

"To travel down in their numbers and make this journey on a Tuesday night isn't easy for fans, and I know all of the players and staff really appreciate it.

"In the end, we wanted to win that one for the fans.

"The noise they made from that end of the ground really got us through.

"I've said it many times before that it is about a relationship between the two (fans and players)."
