BATTLING BANTAMS SEE OFF STEVENAGE

20 August 2019

Gary Bowyer's battling Bantams dug in to claim a gritty 1-0 victory at Stevenage this Tuesday, making it two wins out of two for City in Sky Bet League Two in recent days.

Coming on the back of last Saturday's home success over Oldham Athletic, Bowyer's men came out on top of a hard-fought encounter at the Lamex Stadium to pick up their first victory on the road of the 2019/2020 campaign.

The all-important goal for the Bantams came lead three minutes before the break when Stevenage captain Tom Soares headed into his own goal from a Connor Wood corner.

The opening chance of the game in a fairly even first period when the way of James Vaughan following a Wood cross in from the left.

Vaughan turned his marker in the box, but the skipper's low drive was turned away by Farman.

Arguably Stevenage's best chance in the first half fell to Luther James-Wilkin after Danny Newton had clipped the ball towards the far post.

The Stevenage right wing-back was found in a decent position inside the area, but his lofted header looped over.

Following City's opener via the Soares own goal, there was still time for the Bantams to nearly double their advantage in first half injury time.

Vaughan headed narrowly over the bar from Wood's inviting ball into the box from the left seconds before the interval.

City actually started the second period on the front-foot - with Vaughan and Clayton Donaldson testing Farman early on after the restart - but City were grateful to their own shot-stopper just after the hour mark.

Newton's downward header from a Stokes cross looked bound for the bottom corner, but Richard O'Donnell produced a superb reflex save low to his left to brilliantly repel the effort.

As Stevenage pushed for a leveller as the half progressed and time ticked down, Newton's strike partner, Kurtis Guthrie, sent a header of his own narrowly wide of the far post from a Joel Byrom cross.

Stevenage threw everything at the Bantams in the closing stages, but City's defensive rearguard stood strong to secure a third clean sheet in four.

Bowyer's side did have to survive one late scare, however, when home substitute Ben Kennedy's free-kick from outside the box rattled against the top of O'Donnell's bar.
