O'CONNOR: 'CITY SHOWING DIFFERENT QUALITIES'

11 August 2019

Anthony O’Connor was encouraged by the Bantams showing different sides to their game, following yesterday's draw at Grimsby.

The centre-back believed the challenge the Mariners posed - in his 50th outing in claret and amber - was much different to the one provided by Cambridge United last time out.

However, the Irish defender insists City have dealt with each test appropriately, something which he believes will stand the Bantams in good stead for the remainder of the campaign.

O’Connor said: "We have shown a lot of different qualities and areas of our play.

"We had to respect Grimsby. They are a very direct team and are good at what they do. We were in a battle with them, and coped well.

"Last week, Cambridge sat in very deep and invited us to break them down, but this game was a lot more physical.

"We have stood up to both opponents positively. We are showing different qualities and hopefully - in terms of results - things will soon start to click for us.

"It is another point on the board and we are still unbeaten. We take the momentum from this and move on to next week."

O'Connor has welcomed summer additions to City’s backline and is adamant they will all play their part in bringing the best out of one another.

The former Aberdeen man is a keen advocate of healthy competition for places and insists it could prove pivotal.

He added: "It is really refreshing to be a part of the new-look defence. The motivation is high and we are all determined to put in top performances.

"The competition is always great because you know you have players pushing you all the way.

"If you are not performing all the time then someone will always be there to take your place, so you always need to be at your game.

"It is a squad effort and we must all play our part throughout the season, if we are going to be successful and achieve something special."

City return to action with a Carabao Cup round-one tie at home to Preston North End on Tuesday (August 13) - with supporters able to pay on the gate.
