BANTAMS BACK TO WINNING WAYS

7 December 2019

City returned to winning ways at the Utilita Energy stadium, following a 1-0 victory against Newport County.

After a dominant second-half performance, James Vaughan’s penalty proved enough to separate the two sides.

City’s first chance of the game came in the 13th minute - through Aramide Oteh.

The No.25 lobbed the defender and worked some space but was unable to get a shot away as Newport County goalkeeper Nick Townsend regained possession.

Three minutes later and Oteh worked another chance.

The striker was played through on goal by Jake Reeves but could not convert, as his effort sailed over.

With half-time beckoning, Gary Bowyer’s men stretched the County backline once more - courtesy of Kelvin Mellor.

The defender found himself free inside the box to meet a Reeves free-kick, but saw his headed effort flied over - in the 36th minute.

Newport’s first real chance of the game came in the second half - through Tristan Abrahams.

The striker was gifted possession before striking from the range, but could not hit the target as the ball skewed wide - in the 53rd minute.

Despite the scare, the Bantams drew first blood through top goalscorer, James Vaughan.

The striker latched onto a loose back-pass before knocking it past Townsend, leaving the County stopper stranded and with no option but to bring Vaughan down.

The City skipper picked his spot and placed it into the bottom corner - in the 58th minute.

With confidence brewing, City nearly made it two - courtesy of Oteh.

The attacker was left open and headed towards goal but was denied by a suberb save from Twonsend who tipped it onto the post, eight minutes later.

It did not take long for the home side to strike again - in the 72nd minute.

Paudie O’Connor found himself free at the back post before guiding goalwards.

However, the defender could not hit home as Townsend rushed to make the save.

Despite late chances during nine minutes of injury time, City could not add to their lead as the match ended 1-0.
