Gary Bowyer believes “the right decision was made” as his side’s final pre-season friendly at Rochdale was abandoned during the half-time interval.

The pitch at the Crown Oil Arena was deemed unplayable by match officials after 45 minutes, following a torrential downpours.

And City boss Bowyer was in total agreement with decision to call the contest off.

He said: “It was definitely the right decision to cut the game short.

“The players’ safety is the most important thing and it was apparent, after around 20 minutes, the pitch was not fit to play on.

“We had an obligation to the lads and Rochdale to stop playing because we do not want to be ruining their pitch before the new season has even begun.

“I would like to offer my thanks to all our supporters who travelled over, today, and am sorry we were not able to make their trip worthwhile.”

Bowyer experimented with his squad selection in Greater Manchester, deploying Eoin Doyle behind a front two of James Vaughan and Clayton Donaldson.

He was happy with the presence his forward line carried and remained open to playing all three frontmen together in the future.

Bantams boss Bowyer added: “We carried a massive threat, up front. Getting all three attackers on the pitch worked to great effect and we are very happy with how they performed.

“I am delighted by our performance, in general, for the 45 minutes. The match was played at a great intensity and we applied ourselves extremely well.

“This game has shown everyone what them three can offer us, particularly when on the pitch together.

“It is something we wanted to have a look at and experiment with in a proper game. We are pleased with the result and know we will always have that as an option.”

City return to action next Saturday, welcoming Cambridge United to the Utilita Energy Stadium in their Sky Bet League Two opener (3.00pm).
