BANTAMS TO CARRY HERITAGE NUMBERS

5 June 2019

Gary Bowyer’s Bantams will carry heritage numbers on their playing shirts next season.

Close to 1,300 players have represented Bradford City since the club was founded back in 1903.

Every single one of them is associated with a heritage number and, from August, Bowyer’s men will bear them with pride.

The first-ever player to claim one was John Beckram, who was awarded his on the basis of being first alphabetically in City’s maiden fixture - against Grimsby Town.

Other famous names include Jimmy Speirs (#84), the goalscorer in our 1911 FA Cup Final victory over Newcastle, Ces Podd (#647), City's all-time leading appearance-maker and Bobby Campbell (#710), the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

The Bantams’ heritage numbers were researched and developed by Bantams Heritage, a project launched last year.

City’s head of media and PR, Ryan Sparks, said: “We are proud to be endorsing such a fantastic initiative, of which a lot of hard work has gone into, and making the heritage numbers official for the 2019/20 season and beyond.

“It is a great concept and it will be brilliant to have the heritage numbers present on the players’ strips.

“The club boasts a proud history and our heritage is something we are keen to stay very much in touch with.

“We would like to thank the EFL for their support on this, being such a unique project, and look forward to seeing it come together.”

Aaron Bower, who heads up Bantams Heritage, added: “It is a huge honour for this project to have been officially recognised by the EFL and, more importantly, the club.

“Connecting the present day Bradford City to the generations before us, who have followed the club's journey through history, was the underlying reason behind creating the heritage numbers.

“Now every single City player past and present knows they forever have a place in our history.

"I am sure there will be family members of former City players out there who may not even know one of their descendants played for the club.

“Now they can see a link to that history through the heritage numbers. It's particularly exciting to see the club express such a desire to make this happen - and, we understand, become the first English club to have heritage numbers displayed on the shirts.”

The current first-team squad's official heritage numbers are:
#1206 - Daniel Devine
#1229 - Shay McCartan
#1230 - Omari Patrick
#1232 - Jake Reeves
#1237 - Jordan Gibson
#1240 - Tyrell Robinson
#1244 - Reece Staunton
#1251 - Hope Akpan
#1252 - Eoin Doyle
#1253 - Kelvin Mellor
#1255 - Anthony O'Connor
#1256 - Richard O'Donnell
#1258 - Joe Riley
#1259 - Sean Scannell
#1261 - Josh Wright
#1264 - Connor Wood
#1269 - Eliot Goldthorp

The new signings announced by the club so far for next season - Ben Richards-Everton, Tyler French and Sam Hornby - will receive their official heritage numbers when they make their competitive debut for the club.

If two or more players debut in the same game, they will be awarded their numbers in alphabetical order, the format used for the entirety of the heritage numbers list throughout the history of the club to avoid ambiguity.

Official heritage numbers will appear below the club crest on all playing shirts.
