Gary Bowyer has expressed his delight in securing a headline pre-season friendly against European champions Liverpool FC.

The fixture, announced yesterday, will see City welcome the six-time Champions League winners to the Northern Commercials Stadium on Sunday July 14 (kick-off 3.00pm).

The Premier League runners-up last visited Bradford in May 2001, 12 months after a David Wetherall header famously secured our top-flight survival in a 1-0 win over the Reds at Valley Parade.

Bowyer is confident the test will provide further, ideal preparation for the 2019/20 season.

The City boss said: “The Liverpool game is a wonderful opportunity. We are talking about the European champions coming to play at Valley Parade.

“We will learn so much, with us facing such top-quality opposition and seeing how we perform against them.

“It will be interesting to see who has got the bravery to get on the ball and still try to play how we demand.

“I am really excited, and am looking forward to the game for those reasons.”

The match – between two of ex-City captain Stephen Darby’s former employers - will be contested for the benefit of the Darby Rimmer Foundation.

The charity has been launched by Darby and close friend Chris Rimmer, following the Bantams legend’s diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease and subsequent retirement from football last year.

Bowyer has lauded the efforts of all parties involved with the occasion and is proud of the show of unity in support of the former City ‘History Maker’.

The 47-year-old added: “It is an unbelievable fixture for us.

“We want as many people as possible in attendance for the right reasons - for Stephen Darby.

“It is a great mark of respect from Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool Football Club, to show they are willing to come and do this for such a special player.

“The lads will have an unbelievable experience playing in the game.”

Tickets for the fixture will go on sale to 'Our City' 2019/20 season-ticket holders on Monday. More information will follow.
