RIBBONS RAISE OVER £2,000 FOR BURNS UNIT

8 May 2019

Bradford Burns Unit fundraiser Georgia Thornton has surpassed the £2,000 mark ahead of Saturday's annual memorial, which will mark 34 years since the Valley Parade Fire Disaster.

Georgia and her family sold handmade claret and amber ribbons, bows and luggage labels to supporters, staff and players over the weekend, as the Bantams ended the 2018/19 season at home to Wimbledon.

On the day, £1,900 was raised and, since, the total has grown to £2,154!

Georgia became well known amongst City supporters during the 2017/18 season after she began handcrafting ribbons to commemorate her late grandmother.

Originally, she created the ribbons for people to wear at her grandmother's funeral - and Georgia donated all proceeds to the Bradford Royal Infirmary's Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit (PSBRU).

PSBRU was founded in 1985, following the fire disaster at Valley Parade - where we lost 56 fans and 258 were left injured.

PSBRU will use the money raised to conduct research in scarring and wound healing to give patients the best possible outcome.

Georgia joined Bradford City manager Gary Bowyer, laying a wreath on the stadium's memorial ahead of kick-off on Saturday.

Bowyer said: “It was my first experience of the occasion and I thought the supporters and everybody connected to the club handled things very well.

“I spent the morning with my wife and we watched the ‘One Day in May’ documentary. It was an incredible tragedy.

“I am glad we were able to pay our respects to the heroes on that day and, sadly, the ones who are no longer with us.

“Once you are touched by the tributes, they stay with you forever."

For anyone who would like to purchase a ribbon, Georgia and her family will be selling them at the memorial service on Saturday May 11, taking place in Bradford city centre  (11:00am).
