YOUNG BANTAMS SEE OFF ROCHDALE IN CUP

29 October 2019

City’s under-18s advanced to the second round of the FA Youth Cup, following a 3-0 victory over Rochdale.

After a dominant first-half display, Mark Trueman’s men extended their unbeaten run to five matches at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

The young Bantams began on the front foot and drew first blood through Kian Scales.

Winger Charlie Wood worked his way through before pulling back for the midfielder, who picked his spot and smashed home - making it 1-0 inside the first 10 minutes.

Two minutes later, Mark Trueman’s men made it two.

City striker Connor Morris found space on the left-hand side before squaring across for Scales. The No.8 made no mistake and placed the ball into the bottom corner.

With confidence growing, City managed to grab a third, courtesy of Morris. The striker found space on the right before blasting the ball past Rochdale keeper Morgan Piper.

The young Bantams could have made it four before the half-time break after Morris was felled inside the penalty area.

Eliot Goldthorp stepped up but saw his spot-kick cannon back off the crossbar.

Rochdale did create a chance of their own courtesy of Peter Thomas - five minutes after the restart.

The winger tried to hit home - from close range - but could only watch his shot skew over the bar.

Despite the early second-half scare, City had a goal ruled out for offside - in the 78th minute.

Midfielder Scales found himself free on the right-hand side before sliding across for Shanks.

The No.10 finished the move but was left in disappointment after seeing the linesman's flag raised.

Dale did have a chance to score a consolation goal, late on, but the young Bantams held on to take the second-round spot.

City’s under-18s will either face Salford City or Carlisle United in the next round.
