O’DONNELL UPBEAT AFTER RETURN TO CONTACT TRAINING

10 August 2020

Goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell is pleased to have returned to full-contact training, after the Bantams moved into stage two of their protocol last week.

Stuart McCall’s side resumed contact preparations for the first time since March, last Thursday, as they look to step up plans - ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The City shot-stopper is thrilled to have his gloves back on after a week of non-contact training, which began last month.

He said: “It has been really good to be back with the lads. Last week was great to be all involved in the same session.

“Thursday was the first time since March we had been able to get the footballs out and have a ball-based session.

“It has been really nice to have the balls back out and we are finally starting to get back to normality.

“The gloves are back on, now, which has been great to get started with. Me and Sam Hornby both feel really good in the fitness and goalkeeping departments.”

O’Donnell has been impressed by the fitness levels of the group, since McCall’s men commenced pre-season training.

The goalkeeper added that, although aerobic standards have been impressive, there is room for improvement on the ball.

He added: “Everyone came back in good shape. The lads have had a long time off but it was a period where we really could focus on getting ourselves fit.

“The first week of training was based around the fitness side of our game, because there were limitations to what else we could do.

“You can see in the sessions that there has been a little rustiness with the ball, but that is expected after the time we have had away. It is something we have to work on.

“The fitness levels are certainly there and everyone is doing the right things and working hard, ahead of the first game of the season.”
