OPPOSITION GUIDE: PORT VALE

The Bantams will be looking to make it four wins from four matches - when hosting Port Vale in Sky Bet League Two (7.00pm).

Vale sit one place above City in the table - in 17th position - having recorded seven wins, three draws and 10 losses. Defeat for John Askey’s side would see City move above the visitors in the table.

TRANSFER ACTIVITY

Port Vale made eight summer signings, with a further eight players departing the club.

ONES TO WATCH

Tom Pope

Pope joined Vale for the first time on loan in early 2011, before signing a permanent deal in the summer. He won Sky Bet League Two’s golden boot during the 2012/13 - season with 31 goals.

The 35-year-old striker left Vale for Bury in 2015, before returning to the club in 2017. He is the club’s record post-war goal-scorer - netting 151 times over three different spells with the club.   

Devante Rodney

The Manchester-born striker penned a three-year contract with the Valiants in the summer. He signed from Salford City where he gained promotion to the Sky Bet Football League. During his time with the Ammies, he was loaned out to Halifax Town and Stockport County.

The 22-year-old represented Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday at youth level before making a permanent move to Hartlepool United in January 2017, where he made his professional debut.

David Worrall

Worrall signed for Port Vale in August 2017 after spending a season at London-based side Millwall. The 30-year-old midfielder has played 21 games for John Askey’s men, scoring two goals and assisting 10. 

Worrall has played for nine different clubs, including a successful spell at Southend United where he won promotion to Sky Bet League One in 2015 through the play-offs - helping beat Wycombe Wanderers 7-6 on penalties at Wembley Stadium.

THE CAPTAIN

Leon Legge has represented eight different clubs including Tonbridge Angels, Brentford and Gillingham. He has made over 400 career appearances since he made his debut in 2002.

The 35-year old defender joined Port Vale from Cambridge United in 2018 after spending three seasons with the U’s. Legge has played 17 times for Port Vale this season, scoring three.

THE MANAGER

John Askey made over 500 appearances for Macclesfield Town as a player before hanging his boots up in 2003. After a spell as academy manager at the Silkmen, he was appointed manager of the first team in 2013.

He led them to the FA Trophy Final in 2017, where they were beaten by York City and then guided the club into Sky Bet League Two the following season. 

Following his success with the Lancashire outfit, he joined Shrewsbury Town in June 2018, before being appointed manager of Port Vale in February 2019.

LAST TIME OUT

Relegation-threatened Barrow took all three points away from Vale Park on Boxing Day, as two goals either side of half-time were enough to earn the Bluebirds their fourth win of the season.
