COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GIRLS PICK UP THREE TROPHIES

14 September 2020

Three Bradford City Girls FITC sides picked up trophies at the West Riding Girls Football League Finals over the weekend.

The finals - held at Ackworth Juniors Football Club in Pontefract - saw five Bantams teams in action across Saturday and Sunday.

Two of the City teams competed in shield finals, with the under-15s prevailing 6-1 over Wigton Moor Wolves, before the brave, injury-hit under-18s - who finished the game with nine players - lost out 2-1 to York RI.

The remaining three sides were all in cup-final action. City's under-16s were defeated 5-1 by Brighouse Juniors Alpha, while the under-14s and under-12s both scored five goals to emerge victorious, with respective 5-2 and 5-0 triumphs over Horsforth SM Kicks and Wigton Moor.

Community Foundation coach and Bradford City Girls FITC business development officer, Qasim Akhtar, was proud of the way each player conducted themsleves, irrespective of the results.

He said: "It was great to be back to competitive football after what feels like a lifetime away from it.

"Having five teams representing Bradford City Girls FITC in the finals was a great achievement and one all of our players and coaches should be immensely proud of.

"We are strong believers in the development of individual players at Bradford City Girls and a big part of an individual's development is both winning and losing.

"For the girls who were on the winning teams this year, I really hope it is an experience they will cherish and believe it will motivate them to work harder than ever to better themselves further.

"For those who were unfortunately on the losing team, I have every bit of confidence that they will bounce back from this setback even stronger and be more determined to go that one step further next season.

"I would like to give a massive shoutout to our under-18’s side, who played the majority of the game with 10 players and then even nine players for the last 20 minutes.

"They eventually lost to York RI 2-1, but the never-say-die attitude they portrayed during that game will serve them very well in football, and life."
