Two-goal hero Lee Novak labelled the Bantams' 2-1 triumph over Stevenage as "a great show of character".

The frontman netted a brace as Stuart McCall's side staged a second-half comeback to take all three points at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

Novak - who took his tally for the season up to four - was proud of City's fighting spirit.

He said: "The lads showed great character and carried it on from last week’s performance at Forest Green.

"The three points have definitely lifted a weight off our shoulders, after last week’s result.

"To get that first win is massive, and I thought we really deserved it.

"It is always great to get on the scoresheet and I was pleased with the two goals, but could have probably added a few more.

"But, I will never be disheartened if I miss, because I would rather be there and miss chances than not be there at all. You have got to be in the right positions to miss chances.

"I should have maybe scored a hat-trick in the end but, most importantly, we got the win, secured our first three points of the season and - luckily for me - I scored the two."

Novak also praised the level of competition within McCall's first-team squad, following the arrival of Gareth Evans and Levi Sutton's return from suspension.

The experienced forward acknowledged a "healthy" battle for places and argued it is something his manager is keen on building upon.

Novak added: "The gaffer is really building something, here. If you are in the starting 11, you want to keep your place, so have got to do everything you can to keep that spot.

"Competition brings the best out of everyone - from Richard O’Donnell in net all the way up to us boys up front.

"Everyone wants healthy competition and it is good for us to have that in the squad.

"We are a confident team and everyone believes in each other to do well, so as we continue on through the season we will score goals, secure more points and, hopefully, climb up the table."

City are set to recommence Sky Bet League Two action with a 3.00pm trip to Grimsby Town next Saturday (October 3).
