Stuart McCall was left to rue missed opportunities as City were held to a goalless draw in their Sky Bet League Two opener against Colchester United.

Lee Novak had two attempts saved in the first half and a goal ruled out in the closing stages after the linesman had raised his flag.

The Bantams boss was frustrated with his side’s inability to convert their chances, but recognised the quality of their visitors.

McCall said: “It is always slightly disappointing not to win at home, but I knew before the game Colchester would be tough opponents. They came here to win the match.

“They placed their three attackers against our three defenders, so it was three v three at times.

"I thought we defended really well and we are happy with a clean sheet.

“We started the game positively and had a fantastic move where the goalkeeper made a really good save from Lee Novak, where we probably should have scored.

“If we had have played the game tomorrow, perhaps the linesman would not have put his flag up for Novak’s goal in the second half. It was very tight."

McCall confessed playing behind closed doors was a difficult challenge, but was impressed by the attitude and desire shown by his team.

“There were moments where we thought the game was ours for the taking and we looked really on top," he added.

“I am sure, with 15,000 supporters behind us going into the final stages, they might have been able to suck the ball in for us.

“Hard work will never be doubted in our side, now. The endeavour and effort of our players will always be there, in every game.

“As a group, we are going in the right direction but need to improve on the quality in certain areas.

“It was disappointing for us to not to win the game but, in the grand scheme of things, we have not lost.”

The Bantams return to action at the Utilita Energy Stadium on Tuesday, hosting Lincoln City in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
