BANTAMS OVERCOME BLACKBURN

City recorded their fifth-straight pre-season triumph with a 2-0 victory over Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

A first-half penalty from Lee Angol and a second-half goal from Callum Cooke were enough for the Bantams to pick up the victory at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

The first meaningful opportunity of the contest fell to the visitors when Danny Butterworth’s left-footed attempt inside the 18-yard box was denied by City goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell.

The hosts were awarded a penalty with 18 minutes on the clock when Alex Gilliead was brought down by defender Daniel Ayala.

Angol stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake in putting Derek Adams’ men a goal up - with his third goal in five days.

City went close to doubling their advantage when Liam Ridehalgh’s cross was headed just wide by Oscar Threlkeld. However, they still remained a goal to the good heading into the interval.

The Bantams did get their second just before the hour mark following a good piece of build-up play involving Threlkeld and Callum Cooke.

The latter than played a one-two with Andy Cook before hammering into the roof of the net to give City breathing space.

Two substitutes then combined when Abo Eisa set up Oliver Crankshaw who had his effort saved by the goalkeeper.

Despite further pressure from Derek Adams' side in the closing stages, they proved unable to add the third goal they craved, as they saw out another pre-season victory.
