BANTAMS RETAIN TOM BANKS MEMORIAL TROPHY

13 July 2021

The Bantams began their pre-season preparations with a convincing 5-0 victory over neighbours Bradford (Park Avenue) - to retain the Tom Banks Memorial Trophy.

Goals from Niall Canavan, Andy Cook, Kian Scales, Ollie Crankshaw, and Abo Eisa wrapped up the win for Derek Adams, who was overseeing his first fixture as City boss.

The visitors got the evening off to the perfect start when Canavan latched onto a Callum Cooke corner to head the opener into the bottom corner.

City continued to dominate possession throughout the opening period and almost found a second when Charles Vernam struck a thunderous effort against the crossbar.

Park Avenue almost levelled the scoring when Rob Guilfoyle broke forward before cutting inside and unleashing a right-footed effort which was denied by Richard O’Donnell, ensuring City remained in front heading into the interval.

It was an entirely new Bantams line-up for the second period and summer signing Abo Eisa nearly found the back of the net early in the half, but his effort flew just wide of the far post.

Cook, who was as lively as ever leading the frontline, almost doubled City’s lead when his looping header hit the inside of the post before the hosts' 'keeper got his gloves on the ball.

However, moments later, the City No.9 saw a reward for his persistence as he reacted first to a scramble in the penalty area and lashed home to double his side's advantage.

Adams' men continued to impress in the second half as Crankshaw broke down the right wing and pulled back a low cross for 19-year-old Scales to notch against his former loan side.

Cook continued to harass the Park Avenue defence and was brought down in the area to win a penalty, and an opportunity for a fourth goal.

Crankshaw rounded off his impressive evening by dispatching the penalty into the bottom-left corner, having grabbed the ball immediately.

Eisa then wrapped up the scoring as he managed to sneak a touch onto a well-hit strike from Levi Sutton to take it past the 'keeper and see City leave the Horsfall Stadium with a comfortable pre-season victory.
